Shout outs for exceptionally helpful and cheerful service on today's errands:

⭐ Nico Cerna, mechanic at Peninsula Bike Works in Monterey http://www.peninsulabikeworks.com/ , who promptly took care of our tires after a run through sharp, broken car parts on California Highway 68 at Olmsted Rd (yes, report to Caltrans https://csr.dot.ca.gov/ - https://bikemonterey.org/where-to-report-a-bikeway-maintenance-need-in-monterey-county-plus-maintenance-needs-for-california-state-highways.html). #LocalBikeShop

⭐ Emory, carryout helper at Trader Joe’s, MRY, who made short work of packing our cold things on ice in our panniers.

As for that Twain pin on our vest (note #AltText): Here’s just one example of undeserving: https://sfba.social/@bikemonterey/116933522910110631

We haven’t been doing much night riding lately. After biking in to town to pick up a Father's Day card for two special dads, we have a fresh memory of one of our favorite things about night riding: There are usually far fewer cars on the roads!

Another favorite thing: Being prepared to easily take theft-prone items in with us when we went inside the card store, thanks to having an Ortlieb Vario Lite hybrid backpack-bicycle bag. Having that terrific bag is only because of the kind generosity of Jeff Scully, Ortlieb USA LLC, who donated it in 2025 as part of a thoughtful care package of Ortlieb products, in support of our direct outreach by bike. https://bikemonterey.org/about/financial-donations/acknowledgements-dress-up-challenge-prize-donors

Another favorite thing: The card store employee who welcomed us to bring our bike indoors. That’s especially appreciated because there’s no bike rack or well-lit, line-of-sight place to lock up.

@acdha @JanetPHorner @Feljin - when you’re old it’s often hard to get exercise. #ShopByBike makes a huge difference, as well as cycling lifting mood and happiness
“ In Census block groups with the highest share of residents between ages 60 and 79, protected bike lanes produced particularly strong ridership gains” - getting older people riding bicycles saves lives

We’ve never ordered anything from #Amazon (no shade to those who have no other option). We prefer to #BuyLocal, and we lament the closure of many local stores (e.g., we remember when there were 4 locally owned office supply stores nearby—now 0). Most of us are compelled to shop big box stores now.

A local #Target store was opened for years before we succumbed to occasional Target purchases. We do appreciate their drive-up / bike-up option to pick up our purchases—no need to enter the store!

We’re also grateful that a friend who no longer used these Ortlieb panniers gave them to us on “permanent loan."

Friday is farmers market day at Del Monte Center, Monterey. Don’t know who rode this bike to DMC today, just appreciate that they did. DMC is in city of Monterey. The city’s bike-aware leaders, e.g., Mayor Tyller Williamson and Council Member Gino Garcia (whose day job is working for Ecology Action of Santa Cruz / Lets Modo) may be unaware that we formerly had in that Shopping section of the Tips guide a detailed map listing all Del Monte Center bike rack locations. Their ED at that time himself biked to work! Why is that detailed map no longer in our guide? Because DMC 🔥REMOVED those bike racks! 😭#NotProgress #GoingBackward #CarbonEmissions #TrafficCongestion #Monterey #ActOnClimate #ClimateCrisis #transportation

Got a few miles in today using a ride to the store as a test for a #bikepacking bag I picked up off #aliexpress. The verdict? So far not terrible. #biketooter #Gravelbike #shopbybike
