"Mahmoud Khalil’s wife watched as agents from the Department of Homeland Security handcuffed her husband and whisked him away from their New York City apartment in an unmarked vehicle on Saturday evening.
Agents ignored the pleas of Khalil’s wife who tried to show them legal papers proving her husband was a green card holder. They wouldn’t heed her requests to share where they were taking him, according to court filings. Eventually, one of the agents offered a terse response: Check the local immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan."By next morning, however, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainee locator indicated Khalil was no longer in New York. Instead, it showed him at the Elizabeth Detention Center in New Jersey. When Khalil’s wife visited the jail, she was turned away.
"Without warning to Khalil’s wife or his immigration attorney Amy Greer, who the same morning had filed a petition to challenge her client’s arrest as a violation of his First Amendment free speech rights, ICE agents had transferred Khalil to a different facility. This time, they moved him thousands of miles south of his New York home to a facility in Louisiana. It wasn’t until Monday morning that Khalil’s exact whereabouts were updated in the ICE online system: the #LaSalleDetentionFacility in #JenaLouisiana, a #PrivateJail operated by the #GEOGroup.

"Three days after his detention, Khalil still has not been charged with a crime. The Department of Homeland Security has said it arrested Khalil, a lead negotiator for Palestine solidarity protesters at Columbia, for having “led activities aligned to Hamas.” President Donald Trump, who campaigned on deporting pro-Palestinian protesters, pledged that Khalil’s arrest is 'the first arrest of many to come' and that his administration would continue to target for deportations 'more students at Columbia and other Universities across the Country who have engaged in pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activity.'
"Although a Manhattan federal court ordered a temporary halt preventing the Trump administration from immediately deporting Khalil, attorneys remain concerned for his well-being and ability to access proper legal counsel. In a motion filed Monday evening by attorneys from the Center for Constitutional Rights and the Creating Law Enforcement Accountability and Responsibility project at the City University of New York School of Law, attorneys seek to reverse the ICE decision and to transfer Khalil back to New York."

When ‘Shock and Awe’ Turns Into ‘Aw Shit’
Shock and Awe! Shock and Awe! Yes, we’re all shocked but I think there’s more of an “Aw Shit” response than there is any real ‘awe.’ At least I hope so. If that’s not the reaction, then you’ve been holed up like a groundhog or in some fantasy of your own creation for far too long.
Of course I’m referring to all of the insane stunts that are happening during these early days of the end of the American Experiment. Don’t blowback on the use of the word “stunts.” People get hurt doing stunt work all the time. Some have died. Both are going to happen at some point in our future.
But make no mistake, these “shock and awe” stunts are literally intended to do real harm while overwhelming any attempt to impede them. It’s designed to create chaos. Sadly, it’s working.
To say the Democrats are in disarray is to spit out a bad cliché like a rotten sunflower seed. To say whatever used to be the GOP has surrendered everything except their daughters to Trump is also old news. That last part might also be premature. To say the fourth estate is complicit misses the point completely. Ask yourself where the cameras were during all of Elon Musk’s frat boy takeovers this weekend. Perhaps if a plane had crashed into the Treasury building they would have been there. To say the oligarchs and tech bros are the real winners is watching a trailer for a comedy action thriller that leaves out the spoiler in which everybody dies in the end.
Josh Marshall has two good pieces about this that are worth reading here and here. They both reveal that we’re cascading down a series of rapids, without a paddle, heading towards a waterfall without a life preserver. One line stands out “The point is that you do ‘shock and awe’ when you don’t actually have the power to pull the job off.” He’s mostly correct there, leaving out only the important part about also having the smarts.
Just remember how shocked and awed we were when the bombs dropped in Baghdad. Also remember how much of a shit show we turned that into.

As the Bulwark article suggests, they may not understand Shock and Awe fully. But that's not to say this strategy can't be devastating and disconcerting, and maybe ultimately effective, even if it's done wrong. In the end, it may just mean everyone is fumbling and it's a free for all as to what emerges. That's not reassuring odds in a field of unbalanced power. So I wouldn't be as smug as this article is, even as it makes some useful points.
This is complicated further (for all concerned) because I'm not sure they have a clear idea who "the enemy" is. This is where The Powell Doctrine is relevant. The dangerous part is that they are positioned to obtain a lot of objectives, but it's not obvious which they intend, to us out here on the receiving end, and probably to them.
They've assembled a kind of coalition of the willing, but some think the enemy is non-believers, some think it's people of other races, some think it's democrats, some think it's anyone who's not a billionaire. The ends sought could be anything from a religious cult to a monocultural society to a feudal state to a technoutopia to one last party before the end of the world. The needs of each of these is different.
As a kid, I was taught the difference between allegiance to flag and allegiance to Constitution, for example, something I don't think is entirely clear to the people coming into power now, or maybe just to some followers. Probably some of them get it, some are clueless, some are just torn.
But also the taught us the reason there is freedom of religion doesn't even require worrying about non-christian religions to see the need for: that lots of people will be OK with prayer in school until they see whose Bible is in use. Even among Christians, the difference between "forgive us our sins", "...our debts", and "...our trespasses" is not a thing that has been possible to get people to agree upon over a really long time. The details matter to people and it all sounds better in broad brush than when played out. And that's a metaphor for what I think we'll see here, not just on religion but on the whole host of issues. Everyone is imagining they're all working together, but they don't yet see they seek incompatible ends.
It's worth reiterating: That doesn't make the situation not dangerous. Some at the top are counting on all of this to leave them with enough keys to power that they can dominate, even though the visions are not simultaneously realizable. Just because their supporters end up disillusioned, that's not necessarily bad for them. All of this was just scaffolding for them to install autocracy.
But it does mean that the timing matters. It means that holding out hope matters. It can fold midway through. It means that calling senators and representatives to tell them this isn't what we were looking for is important. Because right now there are still checks and balances in structural place, even if the people inhabiting those roles are not exercising the power they have to put the brakes on this.
And there are divisions among the ranks of those who are the scaffolding and we need to help them see it. Not by dissing them, but by helping them understand we were never enemies. We were always a United States and if ever there is a time for us to act like it, this is it.
I see people saying "just don't cooperate", but that seems simplistic. There are evils we should definitely not cooperate with. But we need to hold open the lines of potential cooperation so that we are in fact not seen as the enemy. The Constitution binds us and if there is an enemy in this picture, it's the would-be autocrats, who are going to soon turn on many of the people that got them there, just as much as they're saying they'll turn on us.
Nuance still matters. Find it. Help others see it. Help others believe that what we had, and what we can still have, matters. Democracy is messy, so don't let them tell you that because it was messy it was the wrong thing. Autocracy presents itself as not messy, but only by excluding the sensibilities of most. It presents itself as efficient, but only by dismissing the concerns of most. Help people see that not all of the inefficiency, confusion, and friendly rivalry of the past was a bad thing.
The US system had some inefficiency and redundancy built in as a way of slowing the rise of dictatorship. And such systems also act as safety nets. We should not be quick to yield such protections. The relentless quest for efficiency and valuing of nothing else is what brought us this mess. We'll be told by President Musk that this inefficiency and redundancy is intrinsically bad for reasons that are obvious. But it's neither true nor obvious. Ask questions. It's our right and it's also for the good of the nation. We are not the enemy.
