  1. #ShobukanInyoRyu #Battojutsu / #Kenjutsu explores two similar #guardStances in #martialArts: Chûdan no kamae and Seigan no kamae. #Chudan is a #defensive position, effective when stationary, while #Seigan is safer for moving around. Both positions are beginner-friendly and provide a sense of safety, but their extended blades limit offensive capabilities and can make practitioners vulnerable to binds and displacements. Most #kenjutsuka use Chûdan while standing still and Seigan while moving.

  2. JODAN-NAGASHI * GEDAN-BARAI
This #kenjutsu #technique first #parries the #opponent's #sword with one's own #blade held vertical. Then the #swordsman steps forward under the blades, suddenly turning the sword to present the blade's flank, causing the opponent's sword to slide upward.
After a quick horizontal cut to the opponent's arm, we withdraw with a circular step and bat the opponent's blade aside.

  3. KARIGANE-NUKI 雁ケ音抜き
This #battojutsu #technique is one of the fastest drawing forms. To achieve a quicker draw, it forfeits hitting the opponent; instead, the #sword is flipped directly into a #defensive position (kagami-uke 屈み受け - "tilted block"). To ensure that the opponent's sword does not pass underneath the #block, the battôjutsuka assumes a low, forward-inclined stance.

  4. There are several options for #sparring and #freeFighting (#tachiuchi 太刀打ち) when it comes to #equipment.
With a classic #woodenSword (#bokken 木剣, #bokutô 木刀, #kigatana 木剣) and without #protectiveGear, #training at full speed is risky. Many traditional styles, like Tenshin-shôden-katori-shintô-ryû 天真正伝香取神道流, deliberately train at greater distance (maai 間合い) to be able to train without having to hold back or slow down.

  5. #Swordfighting and #kids #training?
Yes, this works! We had a special #Battojutsu Kids training group a while ago.
The kids are from age 8 to 12. We used foam #swords (the same like in #chanbara) instead of normal wooden / steel swords.
Rules were of course not as strict as our normal training.
But it was more action packed. 🤺

  8. Part of our #Battojutsu #training are occasionally #cuttingtest's or #tameshigiri.
Originally, the main purpose was to evaluate the quality of the #blade. Today, this is still one way to evaluate a #katana.

But the abilities of the wielder are equally important. Cutting a #tatami mat isn't hard. But getting a clean cut is.

  9. How do you train #swordfighting?

Besides real #Katana's, we also train with wooden swords. We combine them with fencing masks and protective gloves.

Why not #shinai's? That has multiple reasons. First #bokuto are cheaper, easier to maintain and are closer to a real sword.

We keep the price low so that more people can afford to participate in #training. Every type of protective gear is OK, as long as it gets the job done.
