As much as I am unqualified when it comes to talking #SHMUPs , I am equally if not more so when it comes to #Macross
But, for #SHMUPtember I played Robotech the Macross Saga for the #GBA
I am sure the property is a excellent avenue for Mech based SHMUPing. Featuring multiple playable characters, an experience/skill leveling system and a transformable vehicle, all of which, on paper, sounds excellent. But the delivery is just really bland.
Even power-ups, like a spread shot, disappoint. They have super limited ammo, meaning you probably won't get to enjoy the power fantasy moment of shredding hoardes of enemies.
The few boss fights in this game are also just underwhelming. The fact there are three, across the 10 stages feels like a crime to me. And two of the stages are just the boss fights!
I could see potential in this, which makes it all the more frustrating that it turned out this way. Though, what I find more baffling is that they released a HD version of this game in 2021!
