  1. So, I had been dreading something like this coming my way in #SHMUPtember

Aero Fighters for the #SNES is a port of an arcade game that is, for lack of a better word, intense. Before i could be led into a false sense of security with this one, the first stage blind-sided me with some cheap shots and intense bullet patterns.

Not quite bullet hell, but weaving through spread shots is not for the faint of heart.

The game is solid, and I was grateful for having bombs that can provide temporary reprieve and some invulnerability time. A luxury i was missing from the older Aleste games

The game has 8 playable characters, and two secret characters, all who have unique weaponry and differences in movement speed

When the game is not breaking your legs, forcing you to pump continues into it, the entire game is about 20 minutes long. So it doesn't take long to get into the groove and learn some patterns and strategies.

And when you do beat it, it feels like quite the accomplishment

  2. Looking for PC games like Paperboy, Desert Strike, and SWIV — players and devs, please help

Hey everyone. I’m hunting for games on PC (especially Steam) that capture the feel of three old favorites: Paperboy** — ride a route, throw stuff, dodge chaos in the street, score-chasing, “one more run” arcade loopDesert Strike** — isometric chopper action, mission objectives, rescue/destroy targets, managing fuel/ammo/armorSWIV** — top-down/vertically scrolling shooter with ground + air vehicles, tight arcade shooting, that Silkworm-style chaos Not looking for a 1:1 remake. I […]

  7. Because of course the Japanese pilot in #AeroFighters shoots Kunai out of his ship.

He is fashioned after a Ninja, but... I dunno, all the other base weapons come across a bit plain and generic against the guy who shoots knives out of his fighter.

  8. After playing Aleste, it was kinda nice to play an easier #SHMUP though, what I will say about Legendary Wings, is that it was perhaps too easy?

It combines top down and side scrolling gameplay, and two weapons, a main gun and bombs for targets on the ground.

Despite this... There was a distinct lack of variety in this game, with all the sub-bosses and main bosses effectively being the same.

But for what it is, it was still an enjoyable game despite some jank with taking damage temporarily removing your collision for a second, meaning you can clip into and get stuck into walls.

Artistically the game is bizarre as well, with Egyptian motifs, tech bases and even weird fleshy horror caves.

Though, one thing I will say, the box art of the man with wings, flying past a weird large yellow head in the ground is absolutely not a lie!

All in all, it is nothing particularly special, but it is a nice breezy play at about 30 - 40 minute for a run.
