The mint family is one of the larger families with 236 genera and over 7000 species it contains most of our culinary herbs such as #rosemary (Rosmarinus) #thyme (Thymus) #mint (Mentha) #oregano (Origanum), savory (Satureja), #basil (Ocimum) #lemon #balm (Melissa), #shiso (Perilla) #sage (Salvia). Purple - Shiso (Perilla frutescens var. crispa)

Only one Shiso, but I saw a lot of Egoma 🙄

Both are from Asia, but growing on a creekside trail in Southeastern Pennsylvania 😮

I have been wondering if this is Japanese Shiso (beefsteak plant) as this pops up in my yard from time to time. Google lens tells me - yes, it is 👍

It must be derived from a gift that we got from our friends🤔 They gave us a Shiso plant when they went back to Japan several years ago. At that time, we failed to keep them alive, but they are still here 😊

I've got this beautiful red perilla plant that's not gonna eat itself. I want to use it in soups, stir fries, that sort of thing but I can't figure out quite what flavors its supposed to go with. So far I've found some kind of pesto, something that claims to be a soup (but sounds more like a smoothie), and shiso-leaf tempura. Maybe some bread or rolls. What else should I know about?

(Looking for vegetarian dishes only, at the moment.)
