  9. One day, there's faults. The next day, no faults! How does that happen? Why #CoverUps of course!

"Possible two active faults situated under the [#Shika / #Shiga] reactors

"On 16 July 2012 research done by the Japanese government revealed the strong possibility that the S-1-fault beneath the power station might be active, raising doubts about the claim made by the company in 1997 that it is inactive. It is not allowed to build a nuclear reactor above an active quake fault. If these findings would be confirmed, the Shika power station could be labeled as sitting on premises ineligible for a nuclear power plant. The fault, which runs southeast to northwest within the premises—moved sometime after 130,000 to 120,000 years ago.

"A review of old excavation data did suggest the strong possibility, that S-1 could have been active in a relatively recent period. Considering the presence of another fault that lies beneath the No. 2 reactor, should the two faults move at the same time, it could put the power plant into danger.

"A Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) draft report of March 2016 confirmed that the fault below unit 1 is likely to be active, and that two faults below unit 2 were possibly active.

"In 2023 however, the NRA finally agreed with Hokuriku Electric [#HEPCO] that no active faults exist under the plant. (!!!)

"In the 2024 Sea of Japan earthquake, it was reported that an explosion occurred on the site with a reactor being rendered inoperable after an oil spill."

"Cooling continues even if some external power sources cannot be used" Nuclear Regulation Authority

    1st January 2024, 10:40 pm

"According to the Nuclear Regulation Authority, at Hokuriku Electric Power Company's #Shiga Nuclear Power Plant in Shiga Town, #Ishikawa Prefecture, where a seismic intensity of 7 tremor was observed, some of the systems that receive electricity from the outside have been disabled after the #earthquake, but the power supply for safety-critical equipment has been secured by other systems, and the cooling of the spent fuel pool where nuclear fuel is stored has continued.

"At the #Shiga #NuclearPowerPlant, both Units 1 and 2 have been shut down for a long time, but according to the Nuclear Regulation Authority, after the earthquake, there was information that 'there was a sound like an #explosion and a burning smell' near the transformer used to receive electricity from the outside at Unit 2.

"At around 5:30 p.m., the staff of the power plant confirmed that the fire extinguishing equipment had been activated and no fire was confirmed at this time, but that one system that uses this transformer could not receive electricity from the outside.

"According to the Hokuriku Electric Power Company, it is believed that the pressure inside the transformer increased due to the shaking of the earthquake, not the fire, and the device for releasing the pressure was activated and made a loud noise, and the fire extinguishing equipment was activated.

"In addition, at Unit 1, an oil leak was confirmed around another transformer that receives electricity from the outside, and one system is no longer available.

"As of 8:30 p.m., both Units 1 and 2 are receiving electricity from the outside using other systems, and even if electricity is not available from the outside, there are multiple diesel generators for emergency use, so the power supply to safety-critical equipment is secured.

"In addition, some water spilled onto the floor of the pool where nuclear fuel is stored at Unit 1 due to the shaking of the earthquake, and the pump that supplies cooling water was temporarily stopped, but it was restored at 4:49 p.m., and there is no problem with the cooling of the #SpentFuelPool where nuclear fuel is stored.

"In addition, as of 8 p.m., information on 11 monitoring posts set up by Ishikawa Prefecture in the area north of the nuclear power plant in the vicinity of the Shiga Nuclear Power Plant within a radius of 15 to 30 kilometers is no longer available.

"However, no abnormal values have been confirmed at monitoring posts in and around the site of the nuclear power plant, and there is no impact on the environment at this time, and there is no problem with the monitoring system."

  30. From late October (since 1671) an antler cutting ceremony called 'Shika-no-tsunokiri' (鹿の角切り) takes place at Nara Park.

Killing one of Nara's sacred deer was punishable by death for many centuries. The law was last enforced in 1637.

Our very own Keiko-san, during her university days in Nara, would often help rounding up the deer for the antler cutting😲
