I've finally cut the knot in my mind; I will make a site (community perhaps) to promote women in heavy music (post-hardcore, metalcore, deathcore).

I've been struggling with whether I'm 'allowed' to do so as a man, and the fact that I know there's the sentiment that as band you don't necessarily want to be known as 'female-fronted', you're just whatever genre you play.

But I genuinely get happy from screaming women 🤭 and maybe it's not all that deep. Anyway, currently #listening: Palebloom - Maybe I'm Not That Alright

🗣️ I love this band, heavy beats, awesome screams, beautiful cleans and that from a country you hardly ever hear from. In 2019 they parted ways with vocalist Duong Bui and eventually found Nân. Unfortunately for me Nân doesn’t do screams and so the band has been heading in more of a post-hardcore vibe.

🗣️ Sharptooth is actually two different bands. Former vocalist Lauren Kashan (featured in this video) was with the band until the middle of 2022 after which Marissa Ward took over the spot. The band has indicated to not play ‘old’ material out of respect and is redefining itself. How this will play out is unknown so far, but hardcore is definitely part of it.

🗣️ Shoot The Girl First was born in the golden age of emo and were pretty much crabcore. 🦀 Their song “Last Breath For A Capulet” encapsulates it all. The album they released in 2013, “Follow The Clouds”, is moving more towards metalcore, but still with electronics. Their latest album in 2016 can be considered metalcore, electronics still included. Julie Bourboujas plays synth and does screams. Early on as backup screams (that’s a thing!) but with their latest album it’s pretty much 50/50.

Personally I’m not a fan of the copious amount of djent in their songs, but this is definitely a band you should check out. One of their most famous songs is ‘Pisces’ where she catches everyone off guard with her voice.

These vocals as well as the keyboard tunes are provided by Booka Nile. However she recently left the band and in her place has come Alex Reade who fills the role neatly. 🗣️ This band got promoted by Spaceuntravel and ended up in their Spotify playlist. At one point in the song some cleans came through and I finally realized that this was a woman screaming. I really like their sound a lot and they’re quite up-and-coming. They’re definitely leaning more towards the hardcore part of melodic hardcore 🤘.

📚 Spiritbox is a Canadian metalcore band that formed in 2017. Lead singer Courtney LaPlante and guitarist Michael Stringer were previously playing in the band iwrestledabearonce, which was an experimental mathcore band.

🗣️ Courtney is awesome. That’s it. In all honesty her vocal abilities are quite amazing, the way she can go from cleans into screams and vice versa is amazing. The song I shared has a great example of this at the end. Some other great tracks: Holy Roller, Rule Of Nines and Secret Garden. 📚 The Charm The Fury is a now defunct metalcore band from Amsterdam, NL. They released an EP and 2 albums since their start in 2010.

🗣️ This was the first band I heard where I unbiasedly liked the screaming vocals of the singer. It helped a lot that this band was from 🇳🇱 the Netherlands, my stomping grounds.
