#sherrilynIfill That is why the effort by Trump and Republican state leadership to gerrymander Black representation out of Congress must be understood as not only an attack on Black people, but on democracy itself. If the Republican racial gerrymandering effort is successful, the U.S. will lose any claim to democracy for a generation or more.
And the forces that stand today against citizenship and political representation for Black people won’t stop there. They will not tolerate meaningful political representation for any group that opposes their oligarchical Christian nationalist ideology. They seek a one-party political system in a country ruled by authoritarians. The political oppression of Black people is not the end. It is the conduit.

From #sherrilynifill What are we prepared to do to fight for the idea of a truly just America even if we have never seen it? Where did we fail as citizens to uphold the sacred obligation to protect our democracy? Do enough Americans believe that it is possible to create a multi-racial democracy in which equality and justice and our core values? This was the America that the framers of the 14th Amendment made possible.
Is it even possible to set our country on a course for redemption? How can we come to terms with the fact that half our fellow citizens embrace cruelty, racism, ignorance, and cultism over democracy? How will we navigate the violence and cruelty of these times and protect ourselves, our families, and our integrity?

What this conservative majority is revealing about itself is worth all of us taking a pause to assess. It is not just that the conservative majority is ideologically driven and captured. It is not only that they appear to be fully onboard with Trumpism, whatever the damage to our republic. What we are facing is a conservative majority that is unwilling, but also quite possibly unable to integrate jurisprudential rigor with intellectual, moral, and imaginative capacity. Or to wrestle with accountability.
This majority is not just conservative. It has grown careless and uninterested in the consequences of its decision-making. And it presents its cold calculation and limited judicial range as virtue.

From #sherrilynifill This country has a unique history with the particular terror of masked attackers. The Ku Klux Klan, the violent white supremacist organization terrorized Black people in the American South in the first years after the end of the Civil War and through much of the 20th century. So rampant was Klan violence in the years immediately after the Civil War, that it threatened to derail the promise of the 14th Amendment, which was ratified in 1868 and was designed to ensure that Black people would equal citizens in post-Civil War America.

"President Donald Trump on Friday morning said anyone caught vandalizing Tesla cars or dealerships would be sent to the notoriously violent prisons of El Salvador for a 20-year sentence, a threat characterized by critics as 'delusional' as well as overtly #unlawful.
"'People that get caught sabotaging Teslas will stand a very good chance of going to jail for up to twenty years, and that includes the funders,' Trump stated overnight, adding in all caps: 'WE ARE LOOKING FOR YOU!!!'

The presence of robust Black achievement is a signal for them that things have gone too far. And so despite the ongoing racial wealth gap, the educational achievement gap between Black and white children, the ongoing reality of housing discrimination, employment discrimination, environmental injustice and police violence against unarmed Black people, something must be done. Time to dial back the efforts to bring Black people more fully into spaces of influence and power. It is not our incompetence they fear. It is our excellence. -

Thank you #sherrilynifill For my friends in media, many of you are already failing this preliminary moment. Tighten up your language. Stop conceding the rationality of things that are fundamentally irrational and the legality of things that are illegal. Musk and Ramaswamy are leading at best a “project on government accountability.” Maybe and “ad hoc committee” or study group. It is not a “Department” which is a legal term for federal agencies. The creation of federal departments requires an Act of Congress, not the mere whim of a president-elect and his benefactor. Think “Department of Homeland Security.” There is no “Department of Government Efficiency.” And if giving legal imprimatur to this ad hoc initiative is not reason enough to refrain from referring to it as DOGE, engaging in cost-free advertising for Elon Musk’s cryptocurrency (called DOGE) should be reason enough.
