A puzzle from my casebook, laid out for the amusement of the parlour. In 1885 a Virginian pamphlet printed three ciphers said to hold a vault of treasure; the first defies every eye that has met it since. My own is humbler fare, of the plainest drawing-room kind. Each letter has marched forward thrice through the alphabet. Restore it, and earn my compliments:

In August 1901, The Strand Magazine began serialising The Hound of the Baskervilles — and circulation rose by some 30,000 copies a month, readers queuing for the next chapter of a spectral hound on Dartmoor. Tonight watching an episode of the "Elementary" version of Sherlock Holmes, to relax amidst some writing tasks.
It's not deep, but the transfer from Victorian England to modern America is quite ingenious, it works. Jonny Lee Miller is fantastic as recovering heroin addict Holmes, and Lucy Liu gives the perfectly matching Watson. A solid production that doesn't take itself too seriously.
I love Jonny Lee Miller in this role: his constant agitation, his fast-breathing voice, and his face permanently that of a toddler who's been denied dinner. Lovely.
Harmless but joyful entertainment!
