After drinking green teas for a while, I get to craving raw puerh. Most years Bitterleaf sells 50g samples of "Fresh" raw puerh while they are waiting for their teas to be processed. In 2024, "Fresh" came from Bada. No longer quite so fresh. 😏
-
Great Blue Heron is pine smoked raw puerh, (semi-aged maocha blend). Interestingly, I get more character of the base tea and less pure smoke from the smoked raw puerh than I did from Camphire (ripe puerh) yesterday.

2020 "Icelandic Dragon Ball (800 Single Trees)" is another random dragon ball, likely from liquid proust. This is some pretty serious raw puerh from a famous area (but a lot of broken pieces in the dragon ball).
-
Random dragon ball, (probably) via Liquid Proust. Translation of Chinese characters on wrapper by Google. "2020, Sea Lotus Pond (800 Single Trees), Xishuangbanna, Yunnan". Mellow, slightly astringent character. Light bitterness.

The final tea of the Pu-Erh.SK raw puerh educational tasting flight was Xiaguan Tuocha 2005. Xiaguan is well known for its Iron Cakes and it's mushroom top shaped tuocha cakes. It's not uncommon to find older Xiaguan cakes, but it is somewhat uncommon to find cleanly stored examples. This is a well stored example.

Tea number 9 in this Pu-Erh.SK raw puerh tasting flight is a 2011 "Big Green Tree". The proprietor has done some research and found this particular batch of "BGT" was a special commission of particularly high quality material.
-
Tea Number 8 from the recent Pu-Erh.SK raw puerh educational sample set was Xiashu Huazhu 2015. Another compelling mid-age, dry storage, soft power raw puerh.
-
Tea number seven in this educational puerh tasting from Pu-Erh.SK was Yiwu Gaoshan 2015. Some fine hot leaf water, well on its way to being exceptional hot leaf water. If you don't like this, you probably don't like raw puerh.
-
Tea No 6 from the Pu-Erh.SK educational tasting flight is Pang San Zhou 2020, another Thailand raw puerh tea, and a rather nice one at that. Slight pleasant bitterness, calming energy.
-
Tea no 5 from a recent Pu-Erh.SK educational tasting flight was a Gedeng 2024 autumn raw puerh. Soft power.
-
Tea number 4 from the Pu-Erh.SK raw puerh tasting flight is one of their Thailand raw puerhs, Grand Reserva 2022. Another sample that must have come from a particularly compressed part of the cake, rock hard.
-
@tea Raw puerh No 3 from a recent Pu-Rth.SK sample set is "Yiwu Zhang Jia Wang 2024 autumn". One of my favorite teas in the batch!
-
Raw puerh number 2 in the Pu-Erh.SK tasting flight was one of Pu-Erh.SK's Thailand raw puerh, 2023 Mind Switch. I think I got a piece from a tighter compressed portion of the cake, resulting in more broken leaves and higher astringency. (I also feel like I underdosed the first brew, and overdosed second brew. Feeling zoomy.) Slightly fruity with a minty aftertaste.
-
@tea Turns out tea number one from this pu-erh.sk tasting flight is a "Mansong 2024 autumn" raw puerh. Umami, sea breeze, spring grove.
-
Resetting with some fresh raw puerh before restarting the pu-erh.sk tasting flight with the names and origins of the teas. 2025 Yiwu Zhang Jia Wang from Pu-Erh.sk.
-
I'm guessing Tea No 10 from this Pu-Erh.SK educational raw puerh tasting flight is some pretty old commercial puerh. Comprised mostly of broken pieces, flavor is a tad smoky but the smoke is well integrated and blended with the perfume. No off storage flavors, mellow and drinkable. Lingering sweet/bitter.
-
Number 7 on this Pu-Erh.SK sample flight is a very nice raw puerh with a little apparent age. A bit more assertive than some of the other teas in the set. A rounded filling flavor, perfume/incense character, and lengthy after impressions.
-
Starting to think that the structure of this Pu-Erh.SK tasting might be that the even numbered teas are more "industrial" and the odd numbered teas are smaller batch. So far, all the odd teas are looser press and more entire leaves. 5 is another very nice tea; subtle soft flavor, lingering scent in the bowl, pleasant returning sweetness on the palate.
-
Tea No 3 from a recent Pu-Erh.SK raw puerh tasting flight. Mellow flavor, no off storage taste, pleasant returning sweetness. Look forward to finding out what this one is, very nice!
-
Every once in a while, Peter from Pu-Erh.SK will put together a very limited raw puerh tasting flight from his own collection. Always interesting, it is a good chance to taste a variety of cleanly stored raw puerh, vintage and new. Tea No 1 out of 10.

2010 Xiaguan Nan Zhao is another random raw puerh sample from Liquid Proust. Xiaguan is a classic puerh factory, well known for their "iron cakes" and similarly densely packed tuo (mushroom top shaped cakes). 2010 Nan Zhao is not that densely packed. Smokey character, complex flavor, bitterness creeping at the edges. If you're a sensitive type, not a tea to drink on an empty stomach. The internal leaves in the cake are very small, shards. Keeping steeps short. Tea drunk by noon.
-
2015 Wanggong Baohongyinji raw puerh is another random Sheng sample via Liquid Proust, probably from a raw puerh sampler box. BaoHongYinJi is a Taiwan based boutique puerh producer and this is a very balanced young/middle aged puerh. Very loosely compressed, you can tease it apart without a pick. Beautiful leaves. Complex flavor, pleasant returning sweetness, long lingering aftertaste.
-
A single 7g sample of this "ANZAC" 2024 Huangpian blend from White2Tea. Probably included in another order. Softer flavor, some astringency in later steeps. Lingering tongue tingles and pleasant aftertaste. (Left out on the table, knocked off by cat, someone apparently thought it was some sort of chew toy. Didn't seem to affect the flavor.)
-
This 2005 Yang Qing Hao Yiwu Huang Pian is definitely on the forest floor and autumn leaf puddle side of tea flavor. It is a bit astringent/drying in the middle and later steeps. Nice aftertaste and great energy, tho. I must have gotten it in a sampler I ordered from Andrew at Liquid Proust.

2020 Taiji Black Label. Xizihao Daughter Tea calls this a "Banzhang killer", note it comes in "white" and "black" label (when they produce it). "White" is spring and "black" is autumn. In any case, making good progress through my Xizihao Daughter raw puerh samples, tried 'em all, only 4 doses left.

2022 "Elegance of the Century" raw puerh from Xizihao Daughter Tea. If you're going to call a tea "Elegance of the Century", it better be good. While I'm not always a huge fan of very young sheng, this is a very good young sheng from Xizihao Daughter.

Spring 2012 raw puerh from Qiaotoushan, (National Protected Forest,) 10 years in Xizihao Daughter's (I suspect) very dry Taiwan storage. Flavor-wise, it is a quiet tea; "soft power" is the phrase I often use for raw puerh with this sort of character.

2021 To Be Addicted raw puerh from Xizihao Daughter Tea. "...from unmanaged ancient tea gardens near Laowushan and Heshangsi (monk temple), which are about 2400 m above sea level. It is 100 % spring 2021 gushu material. The tea has a rock sugar-like taste, similar to Bingdao teas and a unique orchid note of Xigui teas." At this point, it doesn't grab me as something I love, but I am not over fond of very young raw puerh, no matter the quality.
