This time I write about a spontaneous informative shelter building performance at the Transition Town seedmarket and about free to lend cargobikes in Bielefeld...

I am contacting possible cooperation partners and present my masters project "Common Shelter" at local events. I reached one milestone: I successfully completed all necessary seminars at HSBI to start my last semester: From may 2026 I want to have a public shelter construction site as part of my masters project and i want to build real shelters. At the "Transition Town" Bielefeld seedmarket on march the 1st I started small:

I build a shelter model from recycled wood sticks (as shown on the image) and later put it on my info table. There was also a big Infosheet, flyers and a small 3D printed shelter model my lecturer Prof. Edith Kollath gave me as a gift. I had good talks with visitors and people working at the seedmarket that was organized by "Transition Town" Bielefeld.

"Transition Town" is a multicountry initiative for climatefriendly energy and local transformation. In Bielefeld it initiated repair cafés, community gardens and free cargobikes. At their infotable i found an interesting postcard about "Fleet Bielefeld" (in german "Flotte"):

"Free cargo and transportbikes in Bielefeld. Cargobikes, parallel tandem, riksha – the Flotte Bielefeld counts 17 bikes and one folding bike. They are free to use (donation appreciated) – use not own. The Flotte Bielefeld is a network of different cargobike projects and together working for the transformation of traffic." (my translation)

Ich schreibe aktuell weitere mögliche Kooperationspartner*innen an und stelle das Master-Projekt "Common Shelter" bei thematisch passenden, örtlichen Veranstaltungen vor. Die formalen Hürden des Studium sind genommen: Ich habe alle Seminare im 2. Master-Semester bestanden und möchte ab Mai 2026 eine öffentliche Kunst-Baustelle im Rahmen meines Master-Projekt einrichten, und "echte" Shelter bauen. Bei der Saagutbörse von TransitionTown Bielefeld am Sonntag dem 1. März habe ich schonmal in klein angefangen:

Aus gutem Abfallholz, das bei einem lokalen Handwerksunternehmen als Verpackung anfällt, habe ich neben der Kinderbastelecke im historischen Saal der VHS ein Shelter-Modell für meinen kleinen Infotisch gebaut (siehe Bilder). Dazu gab es einen großen Infozettel, kleine Flyer und das von Professorin Edith Kollath 3D-gedruckte, kleine Shelter-Modell. Ich hatte einige gute Gespräche mit Besucher*innen und Aussteller*innen.

"Transition Town" ist eine in mehreren Ländern aktive Initiative, die sich für eine klimafreundliche Energiewende und insbesondere lokale Veränderungen einsetzt. In Bielefeld hat der Verein z.B. Repair-Cafés, Mitmachgärten und auch kostenlos leihbare Lastenräder mit ins Leben gerufen. Am Infostand gab es eine spannende Infopostkarte zur "Flotte Bielefeld":

"Freie Lasten- & Transporträder in Bielefeld. Ob Lastenrad, Paralleltandem oder Rikscha – die Flotte in Bielefeld zählt bereits 17 Räder und das VCD-Faltrad. Sie sind kostenlos gegen Spende ausleihbar – Nutzen statt besitzen. Die Flotte Bielefeld, die Vernetzung von verschiedenen freien Lasten- & Transportrad-Projekten, bringt ein weiteres Stück Verkehrswende auf die Straße."

Today I write about inspiration for my planned public "Shelter Art Construction Site" and about a 3D shelter model I created.

"Shelter BiePal v001": A sustainable and cheep shelter plan...

The 3D model is based on the geometry of wooden beams (trash of a company) I collect in Bielefeld and with 4 Epal palettes as groundplane to sleep on. Laths of dissassembled oneway palettes can be used for the roof and the sides. For a water resistant rooftop many options are thinkable, e.g. old lorry tarps, gifted old solar panels, or bought foil for plantroofs with soil on it (I don't want to use tarred felt). My modell is a bit smaller than the danish 7.1 model (see update 4). Inspirations for Building as Art and Community Artworks...

I want to build shelters in public space. To experience the feeling while building with ones own hands is an important part of the artwork. There are examples for it:

The italian designer and university lecturer Enzo Mari first published his manifest-like collection of furniture plans with the title „Autoprogettazione?“ in 1974. He wanted to make people feel the process of making art while building their own furniture. [ https://corraini.com/en/autoprogettazione.html ]

A big inspiration is the german artist Joseph Beuys and his concept of the "social sculpture". In 1982 he started his project "7000 oaks - city forest not city administration" at Documenta 7 in Kassel (The city still uses it on their website for city marketing). Many citizens helped planting "Beuys trees". It also inspired other cities like Bielefeld to also plant their own "Beuys" trees. In 2011 the artist and university lecturer Judith Seng invited the audience to enter the theater stage in Berlin and be part of „Acting Things I / Production Theatre“. The 3D model is based on the geometry of wooden beams (trash of a company) I collect in Bielefeld and with 4 Epal palettes as groundplane to sleep on. Laths of dissassembled oneway palettes can be used for the roof and the sides. For a water resistant rooftop many options are thinkable, e.g. old lorry tarps, gifted old solar panels, or bought foil for plantroofs with soil on it (I don't want to use tarred felt). My modell is a bit smaller than the danish 7.1 model (see update 4). Yesterday I had a good talk with some members of the discgolf-chapter of TuS Ost #Bielefeld. We had a walk together and discussed some potential shelter places on site. A cooperation for a public art construction site starting in may 2026 to build two shelters seems possible.

Because of a deadline on the 15th february I proposed the art construction site to the Bielefeld Democracy Fund. With the slogan "Together into the future" it spends money on projects that are for example empowering people. A subgroup of the city council decides until april 2026 which projects receive money (up to 3000 euro each).

The shelter construction project aims to empower people and to allow participation: While building shelters together and later when they are used. There are people in germany who say they won't have the possibility to have one week of holiday trip a year. This was announced by a governmental german statistical institute (I wrote about it in the application to the democracy fund): https://www.destatis.de/DE/Presse/Pressemitteilungen/Zahl-der-Woche/2025/PD25_26_p002.html (in german)

In january i had friendly email contact (in english) with the danish ministry for the environment "Naturstyrelsen". They have example construction plans for shelters on their website. They told me that in recent times mostly modell 7.1 small and 7.2 middle are build.

I read in another source that after a donation of about 2.6 million euro from a foundation about 400 new standard-shelters are being build in denmark in the last years. Welcome to the 4th #ShelterChallenge wednesday update...

Yesterday I had a good talk with some members of the discgolf-chapter of TuS Ost #Bielefeld. We had a walk together and discussed some potential shelter places on site. A cooperation for a public art construction site starting in may 2026 to build two shelters seems possible.

Because of a deadline on the 15th february I proposed the art construction site to the Bielefeld Democracy Fund. Vorsorglich habe ich rechtzeitig zur Abgabefrist am 15.02.2026 für die angestrebte Kunst-Baustelle einen Antrag an den Demokratie-Fördertopf der Stadt Bielefeld gestellt. Unter dem Jahresmotto "Zusammen in die Zukunft" werden unter anderem Projekte gefördert, die sich für mehr Teilhabe einsetzen. Ein Gremium des Stadtrates entscheidet bis April 2026, welche Vorhaben bis zu 3000 Euro Förderung pro Antrag erhalten.

Teilhabe und Selbstwirksamkeitserfahrung stehen sowohl beim geplanten, künstlerischen Shelter-Bau, als auch bei späterer Nutzung im Fokus. Es gibt Menschen in Deutschland, die sich nicht in der Lage sehen, eine Woche im Jahr Urlaub zu machen. As far as i know - until now - there is no such public space where this is allowed for #bikepacking-travellers or hikers. My opinion is: This is not fair! We need (minimum) one free public #trekking place with shelters!

Travelling by bike and long distance #hiking are socially inclusive and simple to start with. There should be public infrastructure for it, to boost climatefriendly travelling. Long distance travels by #bike are more common than you may know. While doing research for the "Shelter!" project I found the following great examples:
