Heute vor 201 Jahren ertrank der britische #Dichter und #Atheist Percy Bysshe Shelley. Der mit Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, Tochter der #Frauenrechtlerin Mary Wollstonecraft und des #Philosophen William Godwin und spätere Autorin des bekannten Romans #Frankenstein verheiratete #Shelley hatte stets ein kritisches Auge auf die sozio-ökonomischen Umstände des frühindustriellen #England und die damit verbundenen politischen #Unruhen: 1819 etwa kam es bei einem #Aufstand von Arbeitern der baumwollverarbeitenden Industrie in #Manchester zu einer blutigen Niederwerfung der ##Protestbewegung, die als #Peterloo-Massaker für Aufsehen sorgte. Shelley verfasste daraufhin in direkter Bezugnahme auf den Vorfall das politisch radikale Gedicht The Masque of Anarchy. A Poem. Der erst zehn Jahre nach seinem Tode veröffentlichte Text konnte zu seinen Lebzeiten auf Grund der politischen Lage zu dem Zeitpunkt nicht erscheinen. Shelley beeinflußte nicht nur den später entstandenen #Marxismus sondern über Walter #Benjamin auch die kritische Therorie.
Eine Vorbemerkung zum Text, den ich in der Originalfassung hier schon mal gebloggt hatte: Der Bezug auf die #Anarchie als Abwesenheit von Herrschaft ist umgangssprachlich und war damals wie heute irreführend. Korrekt wäre "Anomie (griechisch: Kompositum aus α privativum zur Verneinung und der Endung -nomie von νόμος, „Ordnung, Gesetz“). Diese bezeichnet in der #Soziologie einen Zustand fehlender oder schwacher sozialer #Normen, #Regeln und #Ordnung. Vor allem in England war der Begriff ursprünglich ein theologischer Ausdruck für das Brechen religiöser Gesetze." (Wikipedia) Ich habe den Text so belassen, wie Shelley ihn benannte und wie er 1844 von Julius Seybt im großen und ganzen schlüssig übersetzt wurde. Abweichend von #Seybt habe ich die Namen der damaligen Verantwortlichen, sofern von Shelley erwähnt, jedoch ausgeschrieben. Die oben genannte damalige #Zensur oder diplomatische Rücksichtnahme gelten nicht mehr. Die #Grammatik wurde ebenso wie die damalige #Rechtschreibung übernommen. Der #Poesie wegen.
