my friend struggling in Asheville I am trying to get him to #shelby #NC where it is warmer.
There are a handful of food pantries, but the problem is he has nowhere to cook.
I'm trying to figure out how far out of Asheville he can get. #Charlotte might be a better option.
I'm not sure why he won't go to a shelter. Maybe pride? Maybe he is worried his car will get towed?
I haven't lived in NC for 17.5 years, so I am a little out of the loop on what local resources might be.

On the U.S. Supreme Court
—Chief Justice John Roberts and his Republican majority have spent decades systematically dismantling the guardrails of American democracy.Itself the product of unprecedented norm-breaking
—encouraged by a fifty-year special interest campaign designed to weaponize the judicial branch
—it is the Roberts majority that has hastened our endemic institutional collapse. We can draw a straight line, for example,
from the Roberts Court’s 2010 #Citizens #United decision, which invalidated Congress’s bipartisan campaign finance limits on the farcical premise that independent expenditures could not be corrupting,
to the imminent shadow presidency of erratic mega-billionaire Elon Musk, Trump’s biggest outside spender.Citizens United set the stage for the proliferation of political nonprofits and the establishment of #Super #PACs,
giving oligarchs like Musk a megaphone loud enough to drown out ordinary voters. The decision turbocharged Trump’s rise, allowing his allies to flood the airwaves with disinformation and propaganda,
meanwhile trapping Democrats in a system of corporate-funded campaigns that has eroded their ability to represent the working class.Three years later, in #Shelby #County v.#Holder, John Roberts completed his career-long vision quest to dismantle the Voting Rights Act,
invalidating its preclearance requirement for states with a history of racial discrimination.Erasing the national consensus first achieved in the bloody crucible of the Civil Rights Era
and repeatedly reaffirmed by near-unanimous bipartisan Congresses, Roberts deemed racial discrimination a relic of ancient history,
declaring that “nearly 50 years later, things have changed dramatically.”A flood of Republican state voter suppression laws followed, funded, and orchestrated by the same interests to which Roberts owed his majority.
“Throwing out preclearance when it has worked and is continuing to work to stop discriminatory changes is like throwing away your umbrella in a rainstorm because you are not getting wet,”
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg warned in her searing Shelby County dissent. But soaking us was the whole point.
The downpour continues.Final results for the 2024 House elections were tallied recently, and Republicans will owe a razor-thin 220-215 majority to the three seats the GOP flipped thanks to the North Carolina legislature’s brazenly partisan gerrymander,
a move blessed by the Supreme Court’s Republican justices’ 2018 decision in #Rucho v. #Common #Cause. In that case, the Roberts Court
—so power-hungry that leading legal scholars have dubbed it the “Imperial Court”
—conveniently found that #partisan #gerrymandering,
-- a practice dominated by norms-be-damned Republican state legislatures,
-- presented a “political question” that was outside their purview to resolve. -

John Roberts is well aware of the Supreme Court's credibility problems, but he doesn't want to fix it by a code of conduct -- he wants to fix it by cosy interviews with journalists

Equal parts "Dark Money" and "Democracy in Chains",
Minority Rule is a riveting yet disturbing history of the fifty-year Republican plot to
💥hijack #voting #rights in America,
💥its profound implications for the 2024 #presidential #election,
💥and the crucial role that Chief Justice #John #Roberts has played in determining how we vote.In 1981, a young lawyer, fresh out of Harvard law school, joined the Reagan administration's Department of Justice,
taking up a cause that had been fomenting in Republican circles for over a decade by that point.
From his perch inside the Reagan DOJ,
this lawyer would attempt to bring down one of the defining pieces of 20th century legislation
— the Voting Rights Act.
His name was John Roberts.
Over thirty years later in 2013, these efforts by John Roberts and the conservative legal establishment culminated when Roberts,
now Chief Justice of the Supreme Court,
wrote #Shelby #County vs. Holder,
one of the most consequential decisions of modern jurisprudence.
A dramatic move that gutted the Voting Rights Act,
Roberts's decision
— dangerously premised on the flawed notion that racism was a thing of the past
— emboldened right-wing, #antidemocratic #voting #laws around the country immediately.
No modern court decision has done more to hand elections to Republicans than Shelby. Now lauded investigative reporter #David #Daley reveals the urgent story of this 🆘fifty-year Republican plot to end the Voting Rights Act and encourage minority rule in their party's favor.
From the bowels of Reagan's DOJ to the walls of the conservative #Federalist #Society to the moneyed Republican resources #bankrolling restrictive voting laws today,
Daley reveals a hidden history as sweeping as it is troubling.
Through careful research and exhaustive reporting, he connects Shelby to 🔥a well-funded, highly-coordinated right-wing effort to erode the power of minority voters and Democrats at the ballot box
— an effort that has grown stronger with each election cycle.
In the process Roberts and his conservative allies have enabled #fringe conservative #theories about our elections with the potential to shape the 2024 election and topple the foundations of our democracy.
Timely and alarming, Daley offers a powerful message that, while Shelby was the misguided end of the Voting Rights Act, it was also the beginning of something far darker. -

Went to a memorial/remembrance for my recently passed neighbor. It was held at a place where people store their cars. Their higher end cars.
Just a few photos. There were some cars that we were not allowed to photograph.
This was like a museum … of privately owned vehicles.

Tennessee is seriously lax on guns -- And Why is That?
Nearly 1,400 people #die each year in Tennessee by #guns, making it the 10th highest rate in the nation.
There are few requirements for gun purchases, including **no** #background #checks or #training for handgun buyers.
The state **allows** #permitless #carry, even for #concealed #weapons, for anyone over 21, and there are **no** #red #flag #laws to keep weapons out of the hands of dangerous individuals.
Last year, Republicans moved in the **opposite direction** from gun safety, with proposed bills #lowering the handgun purchase and carry age to 18 and #allowing the most dangerous guns, including #AR-15s, to be carried in public.
This was the environment in which the #mass #school #shooting occurred, and which has driven Tennessee students to take to the streets and to #protest at the Capitol.
**Gerrymandered** to the hilt
The Tennessee state House has 99 seats, with the state broken up by maps drawn by the Republican legislative supermajority.
The maps are designed to dilute Democratic representation, both in the state and in its Congressional delegation, something that the #Voting #Rights #Act and the U.S. #Constitution **used to protect against**, before the #Supreme #Court began #gutting voting rights, beginning with its #Shelby #County decision knocking out federal preauthorization for new maps.
The House district maps in Tennessee are a blatant and unapologetic #gerrymander.

Rassistisch motivierte #Lynchmorde in Tennessee
#Lynchjustiz in Amerika

#Shelby was a frequent #critic of commercial space in general and #SpaceX specifically. He did not believe private companies—especially those that did not do much business in #Alabama 💰 —should receive government funding.
He also held the line in 📆 2019 when #NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine suggested that due to #delays with the rocket's development, it might be better to launch the #Orion spacecraft on SpaceX's #FalconHeavy #rocket 🚀 https://arstechnica.com/science/2023/01/so-long-richard-shelby-and-thanks-for-all-the-pork🐖 pork barrel : local projects that are given a lot of #government #money in order to win #votes https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/us/definition/english/pork-barrel
