  3. I’m a nerd. I am an extra nerdy nerd when it comes to shaving. My father never used shaving cream from a can or a bottle. He used a brush with shaving soap in a mug. Old school… is that the proper term? I started out with an electric razor but lost it somewhere and had to borrow his mug/soap/brush kit once and ever since then I have been a mug/soap/brush user too. Maybe the best way to describe it is a mug/soap/brush snob. Yeah, that works.

Years ago… I can’t remember when… 2008? 2010? Jen and I were on a weekend getaway in Manhattan and we stumbled across this super fancy, high end, shaving supply store. We went in because Jen wanted to feed my shaving snobbery because she loves me. We left with this super fancy brush and a super fancy razor handle and a groovy stand that held them both. The razor handle just used Gillette Mach 3 blades, which I was using at the time anyway. The last time I changed the blade the connection piece of the handle broke. I managed to piece it back together but I couldn’t take the blade off anymore. Today I needed a shave… badly… and I also needed a new blade. I tried to figure out how to get the blade off so I could change it, but as I feared the whole thing is broken in such a way that I cannot fix it anymore.

I’ve been a shaving snob with this snooty razor for all of these years. 10 years? 12 years? Something like that. I just ordered a less fancy, less snobby, but still kinda snobby new Mach 3 razor handle online. I am sad. Like… why am I sad? Because I am a snob, and also because Jen and I bought that razor together on a really great weekend trip to New York and that made it extra special.

The new razor is going to be fine. I think it will fit on my snooty, snobby razor and brush stand. It’ll be fine. It won’t, however, be the same. I am a sad snooty snob.

Oh, wow. Many thanks. The 22mm size is ideal, IMO, though I also like 20mm and I have a 19mm that's quite nice — and of course, there's the Wee Scot (mine being particularly good, from pre-Vulfix days).

I have ordered the brush, and I picked up another one of the $27 double slants because that's such a good razor I want to be sure to have a spare. Or two.

  5. A Guide to Using Shaving Soap for Traditional Wet Shavers

  6. Best Shaving Brushes: Synthetic And Badger Hairs Reviewed – Animal-Free Options Are Well Worth Trying

gadgeteer.co.za/wp-content/upl Whilst traditional shaving is hands-down cheaper and better for the environment in most aspects versus cartridge razors and tinned gels, one sore point that still stands out is the perception around the use of badger […]

  7. 5 Best Shaving Brushes With A Quick Step-by-Step Buyer’s Guide

Traditional wet shavers are spoilt for choice when it comes to types and options for shaving brushes. At first, it can also appear quite confusing (and even later as many found out when trying to figure out the Omega brush numbers). This guide is useful in that it also illustrates what you should consider when choosing a brush. There is no "best" brush as our skins are different, the soaps we use are different, and what we are looking for in a brush is also different.

  8. Is a no-name brand bristle shaving brush worth it vs six time more expensive Bluebeards Revenge Doubloon brush?

Well this is ironic, I just discovered that in fact the Bluebeards Revenge brush is synthetic boar hair. It used to be advertised as "bristle" and everyone guessed it was boar hair due to the price being a lot less than badger hair brushes. But be that as it may, this may just be an even fairer comparison then. So my next brush needs to be a real boar hair brush...
The no-name brand brush was selling for R29,95 at Dis-Chem versus the Bluebeard Revenge Doubloon brush which sells for R195 via Takelot.
What is immediately noticeable is the head is fuller on the more expensive brush and this probably makes a big difference. Even after breaking the cheaper brush in (soaking a few hours before use and vigorous drying with a cloth) it did bloom a bit but was still noticeably less head. squeet.me/objects/962c3e10a66d
