It's been a long time since this saw was sharpened. Probably, when it was manufactured. I am guessing late 1800's up to 1930 or 1940. #saw #sharpening

Sharpening tools
When I took up woodworking and bought some chisels a while back, I got slightly disappointed. The chisels were OK, but not as sharp as I would have liked. I have three vintage Stanley planes. Two of them were really sharp upon arriving, but they had also become duller over time. So it was time to get into sharpening After some investigation I bought diamond plates as they were an easy start. I also bought a jig to hold chisels and plane blades. The diamond plates are fast to set up. The […]https://rabbitholes.morkcloud.com/2026/01/25/sharpening-tools/

Christopher Schwarz a rendu son livre «Sharpen this» disponible gratuitement en pdf.
https://lostartpress.com/products/sharpen-this
Ce n'est pas le premier livre qu'il offre ainsi. C'est une belle démarche.👍
Évidemment, je vous encourage à acheter des livres chez Lost Art Press. La qualité est vraiment top et ils paient bien leurs auteurs.

Before/after blade sharpening photo. The scissors are really sharp now! (before they would not cut cloth, now they cut easily and through the full blade). #sewing #sharpening #scissors

Sharpened surface on one side, just for comparison. No corrosion, single surface. Might be a few burrs I could clean there, but it cuts perfectly. #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle #sharpening

Now wicked sharp! Anyone need a small pile of rags cut into tiny pieces, lol? Now I have a decent pair of sewing shears, AND I have learned how to sharpen them. #sharpening #sewing #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle

Looks like the grinding stone is going to be overkill. Almost got this perfectly sharp with a very fine file. Just need to finish up the sharpening at the end!! #sharpening #sewing

Same issue on the other side. May have even been a bit rounded over to the flat side at some point. #shears #sharpening

This edge... corroded and two surfaces, but it should be one clean surface (I believe). #shears #sharpening

In addition to rattling around, edges.most certainly were dull. Attempted a first.pass sharpening of these with a steel, which has gone from "will not cut" to "will cut paper really well". But, it will NOT cut fabric nicely... very rough. So more/better sharpening required. #shears #sharpening

Despite having done the routine many times, the honing of knives to hair-shaving sharpness continues to elude me.
Today, I cleaned and sharpened my favourite pocketknife - a limited edition DPx Aculus flipper (https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-gear/tools/dpx-aculus-flipper-knife-review).
After sharpening with 320, 600, and 1500 grit stones, plus stropping, it cuts newspaper like butter, 80gsm with a little pressure and minor tearing, and pushes my admittedly fine and soft arm hairs over.
The quest for perfection continues!

Poor quality whetstones have many disadvantages. One of them often seems to be that they only remove heavy metal from a blade. If you grind several kitchen knives in a row on it, you should not use your finger as a spacer to the stone to maintain the angle. The stone is wet and cold, you won't notice if your finger is also being "sharpened" and at some point you'll just wonder what brown-reddish streaks suddenly appear to be coming out of the water stone. 🙄

I got my water stones out a couple of weeks ago to tune up my knife and then a straight razor. After dialing in the bevel on the straight razor and getting a lot of experience with these stones, I went back and took another pass at the knife.
I've never had a kitchen knife so sharp before. Apparently I handle the bevel a lot? I've accidentally cut myself twice today.

#Pruning shears & mini #sharpening stick. Must haves for tree pruning.

I finally got myself to do this 😐
It is sort of meditative, I hope 🤔 -
So I have fallen the #knife #sharpening rabbithole for the second time and apparently the #whetstone I bought when i went down the first time is way less beginner friendly and harder to use than the less expensive diamond sharpening plates.
Ugh now I want to order one because I can't get a good edge on my kitchen knife. But I already know I will have lost interest by the time it arrives and I have time to try it out.

I saw Rex Kruger recommend these on his channel and thought what the heck, worse that will happen is I will need to return them. But these $25 set of diamond stones off Amazon have been a pleasant surprise.

I refreshed the edge on this pretty Swede, a #Heljestrand MK Nº 10, for tomorrow's #TabOktoberfest celebration. Looking forward to giving it a spin in the morning.

I bought whetstones a few years back to help keep my knives sharp. And several years later I’m still awful at it. After over an hour of sharpening 6 knives on 4 grit levels, only three of them passed the paper slicing test.
Anyone got any proven methods to do this well? Especially on larger knives?I also remembered I left my leather strop at the workshop, so improvised with an old leather belt tied to a stool. Worked surprisingly well!

AI enhanced version of the previous pic of me as a kid. Pretty good result I think.
