🐴 #LostBones #FossilFriday 🐟🐘🦥🐪 In the summer of 2012, students from the Geology Department at Gustavus Adolphus College collected over 800 bones on the Des Moines River near Jackson, Minnesota.

This crunchy but beautiful left horse femur was part of the project and is now housed at the Jackson County Historical Society in Lakefield.

These two skulls were discovered along with 52 additional bones—ribs, femurs, tibiae, vertebrae, and various fragments near a peat bog in Wabasha County, #Minnesota.

Peat is anoxic, preserving ancient remains very well. It's often speculated that bison were driven into bogs while being hunted, but in many cases, no signs of butchery or human activity are found.

These specimens were all found during a single kayak trip this field season, along just a two-mile stretch of river in southern Minnesota.

Tags include the notation “Maryland and Mississippi” – referencing construction in St. Paul from the 1960s.

The bones were all recovered in Wolcott Township by an independent researcher and are currently housed at the Rice County Historical Society in Faribault Minnesota.

So far, this tooth is one of only two found in Southern Minnesota county collections that I have come across during my #LostBones research.

A remarkable find: Two neighbors contributed a total of 100 bison bones, discovered in separate years from the same lowland peat deposit spanning a highway in Walcott County, Minnesota. Notably, one of the collections shows possible signs of butchery.

🐘 #MammothMonday 🐂🦥🐴🐪🐟🍃 These wonderful mammoth tusks are on display at the Vernal Utah Natural History Museum. They were discovered while digging a well in Craig, Colorado, in 1961 and recovered by paleontologist Ernest Untermann. The tusks belong to a Columbian mammoth and were found under 15 feet of gravel.

The Des Moines and Superior glacial lobes heavily influenced the geology south of Melrose.

The worker was operating a drag line in a peat bog about a mile east of Melrose during the construction of Minnesota Interstate 94.

During the end of the Pleistocene, the remaining horse species in the Midwest, likely Equus scotti, disappeared. Rare traces of these animals, usually teeth, can be found in the Midwest but are uncommon and not well documented.

These two beautiful molars, one upper and one lower, from Goodhue County, Minnesota, are highly permineralized but still require further research.

in 1984, due to the nature of the site and the distribution of the bones, Dr. Stanley Lewis of St. Cloud State University concluded that the bison had possibly been washed in during a flood event.

The Ojibwe called them omashkooz, and the Dakota called them heȟáka.

This gorgeous antler specimen was found near Motley, Minnesota, in 1972 and has been housed for the past 50 years at SCSU in St. Cloud.
