  2. 🐴 #LostBones #FossilFriday 🐟🐘πŸ¦₯πŸͺ In the summer of 2012, students from the Geology Department at Gustavus Adolphus College collected over 800 bones on the Des Moines River near Jackson, Minnesota.

This crunchy but beautiful left horse femur was part of the project and is now housed at the Jackson County Historical Society in Lakefield.

  3. #LostBones #FossilFriday πŸ‚ Five bison species are said to have roamed North America: The Eurasian Bison priscus adapted into Bison latifrons, which downsized into Bison antiquus. Later, Bison occidentalis emerged in the Late Pleistocene, leading to today’s Bison bison. Are they all distinct, or was it a gradual shift?

  4. 🦌#Minnesota #FossilFriday πŸ‚πŸ¦₯🐴🐘πŸͺπŸŸπŸƒRemnants of deer and bison are common along many Minnesota rivers. Teeth, metacarpals, metatarsals, and some long bones withstand the erosive forces of rivers particularly well.

These specimens were all found during a single kayak trip this field season, along just a two-mile stretch of river in southern Minnesota.

  5. It's #LostBones #FossilFriday!πŸ‚πŸ¦₯🐴🐘πŸͺπŸŸπŸƒ Bison hyoid bones are quite rare in the collections I have reviewed. This pair is part of a larger assemblage donated in 2022, including elements from both juvenile and adults.

The bones were all recovered in Wolcott Township by an independent researcher and are currently housed at the Rice County Historical Society in Faribault Minnesota.

A remarkable find: Two neighbors contributed a total of 100 bison bones, discovered in separate years from the same lowland peat deposit spanning a highway in Walcott County, Minnesota. Notably, one of the collections shows possible signs of butchery.

Both collections are now at the Rice County Historical Society in Faribault, Minnesota.

They were discovered while digging a well in Craig, Colorado, in 1961 and recovered by paleontologist Ernest Untermann. The tusks belong to a Columbian mammoth and were found under 15 feet of gravel.

The two indistinct specimens below were found by a friend with a very discerning eye! Both are fragments of teeth: one is a suspected mastodon tooth cusp, and the other is a fragment of either a mammoth or horse tooth. Both have been donated to the Science Museum of Minnesota.

in 1984, due to the nature of the site and the distribution of the bones, Dr. Stanley Lewis of St. Cloud State University concluded that the bison had possibly been washed in during a flood event.

  30. Happy #Minnesota #FossilFriday! 🦬πŸͺ🦣πŸ¦₯πŸ¦«πŸƒ What is the most common Bison bison specimen found in river gravels besides teeth in Southern Minnesota? It's usually a metacarpal or a metatarsal.
