  2. ICYMI: Both Stelliform books that were in the running for a Small Spec Book Award have come out ahead! R.A. Busby's YOU WILL SPEAK FOR THE DEAD is the winner for the horror category and Michael J. DeLuca's THE JAGUAR MASK is a fantasy finalist! We're thrilled to be recognized by small press readers!

  3. Read @vicorva s lovely _Space Dragons: Luxorian's Crew_

Cranky dragon discovers that not all humans suck.

Interesting worlds, complex characters. My only complaint is that it ends! I hope there's more coming!

Plus a Cosmic Horror that lives up to its name! Ick! Nasty!

  4. Oh cool, a list I hate even more than the NYT 100 best books of the 21st Century list. I agree with maybe 20 of these. Another 5 or so I look forward to reading. Where’s Sheri Tepper, you cowards?!? James Tiptree Jr? Vonda McIntyre? Lois Bujold? Élisabeth Vonarburg?

  5. Brilliant world building and an excellent take on an alien culture, truly original and influential space opera. #SciFi #SFbooks #VernorVinge

  6. Some excellent original ideas and an interesting view of a distant future in this space opera. Sadly the dialogue isn't great and a number of characters are annoying. #SciFi #SFbooks

  7. Can heartily recommend this excellent bit of Space Opera. #SciFi #SFbooks #VernorVinge

  8. I watched Gentlemen Broncos last night and was tickled to see this PKD cover art used in the opening credits.

  9. This was my first book by Michael Swanwick, and it was a doozy. Really outstanding worldbuilding. Reminds me of Jeff Noon, Jeff VanderMeer, China Mieville, and J. G. Ballard, to name a few.

I am certainly intrigued, enough to devour another of his novels soon. Any recommendations? I like weird reality-questioning stuff along the lines of Philip K. Dick, the sort of thing people call "dreampunk" these days.

  10. Same old same old, unless you're a real fan of Aliens in which case it's actually quite good. #SciFi #SFbooks #Aliens

  11. CW: Book: Theft of Fire

Theft of Fire, by Devon Eriksen. devoneriksen.com
Semi-hard local space SF which is mostly about capitalism, gender roles, bodily autonomy and people slowly overcoming past trauma. Much better than I expected when I started it.

Book one of an in-progress trilogy.

  12. CW: China, censorship, SF

"A prestigious literary award for science fiction, which was hosted in China for the first time, has come under fire for excluding several authors from the 2023 awards, raising concerns about interference or censorship in the awards process." theguardian.com/books/2024/jan

  13. There's action, there's aliens and there's lots of death. If you like the Alien franchise this is a fairly good entry in it.

  14. Starts as a good version of a very high tech very hard SF future.

  15. An excellent and witty vision of the very far future with lots of depth. #IainMBanks #ConsiderPhlebas #SFbooks #TheCulture

  16. Much pacier and written in a more obviously modern style than Ringworld (I know it's written 10 years later). The story still handles hard SF concepts really well with an original vision of the future. #LarryNiven #RingworldEngineers #SFbooks #SciFi

  17. Retro early 60's SF adventure abounds in this very 'of it's time' story. It's rollicking good fun to read (with some original ideas) just don't expect much characterisation or attitudes that don't pander to males in 1962. #GoodReads #SciFi #SFbooks

  18. MZB has created a wonderful world with a setting packed full of a rich and strange culture. It's a pity that this first novel never got a sequel. What I would say though is that the story and dialogue are very basic and the characterisation is non existent. #SciFi #SFbooks #MZB #GoodReads

  19. You know it's 'Hard SF' when you get 2 full chapters discussing the power source for a ships generator. It's highly episodic and very much of it's time. Reading it was like doing historical research. #SciFi #SFbooks

  20. A tale that hasn't aged well (either in scientific or social terms) but one that still has some good ideas and much to say of when it was written. #SciFi #SFbooks #SFMasterworks

  21. A solid hard SF tale of increasingly space opera scale. It does have patchy pacing, and some characters are a little basic, but overall it's a captivating read. #SciFi #SFbooks

  22. Here's my #introductions...
I'm into #retrocomputing and #retrocomputers, am a #6502 fan, but I like green spaces and days which not overcast, I like science and #sf - mostly #sfbooks and stories - #computerscience, aka #cs or #compsci, I like #brianeno for his music and his thoughtful writings and funny videos, I write just a little code in #python and #javascript and #assembly and generally spend a lot of time on the internet.
Isn't the world a lovely place but in a fine old state though?
