  1. I'm always misplacing my favorite leather thimble, so I finally took the time to connect it to a chain and attach it to an old mood ring I had lying around. Bonus: it looks kinda neat!

  7. For sewing on the buttons, I went to my favorite reference "The Complete Book of Sewing Shortcuts" (which has very few actual shortcuts. It's a reference on how to do various elements of tailoring). Of course it has a good approach: go in through the right side about 1.5 cm from the site, going between the layers, and come up at the button site. Tack a few stitches before sewing on the button. After you knot the thread, pull on the tail, which will bunch the fabric a bit, trim close and smooth the bunching and the tail disappears. #sewing #SewingTips #HowTo #tailoring

  8. I don't remember where I've found this, but to thread an elastic or ribbon through a long casing (1 – 2 m), a (clean) electrician fish tape is much easier and quick than the old method with a bodkin or safety pin.

There are pictures at the link (no alt text, sorry, but the text around them describe what is happening in them)

I offset the underside from the seam line by about 2mm to ensure the teeth and stitches will be covered when it’s finally sewn in. #sewingTips

  14. I bought some PVC fabric. Basically that stuff used for tablecloths. I thought I'd try to make a wipeable washbag to get used to #sewing different fabrics. Do I need a special needle for my machine?

  15. Trouble threading a needle? Try wetting the eye of the needle rather than the thread. I sew when I have to (crudely) and my eyes aren't what they used to be. This tip came at the right time for me. #sewing or #SewingTips

  16. Does anyone have any tips for #sewing this type of fabric? It's very shiny and synthetic, scratchy type of material. It's also quite thin. @sewing

Sorry I'm not very good at explaining the fabric! 😁

  17. Okay so you *can* sew lace on a normal sewing machine but you *cannot* expose it to the hole or depend on the feed dogs to feed it through easily
So 100% put paper or something underneath that you can tear off after (unless you're sewing it to an easier to deal with fabric, in which case just make sure the lace is on the top)
