If you're a NYer or interested in what's happening in NYC, I recommend you follow the Mayor's Office on YouTube.

When he has an event, there's not just the announcement, there are speakers besides the Mayor, and there are questions & answers afterwards. Some are on topic and some are not, but he answers pretty much all of them within the designated time.

When you get it as a "news story" on TV news, it's shorter, but you miss the pushback. You miss the good questions because most mass media don't really do journalism anymore.

I'm glad to see that they are thinking about accessibility from the beginning. I hope it *is* actually accessible to more than just wheelchair users.

Looks like it includes changing stations, but I'm not sure they support changing places for large adults who have that access need.

7am - 10pm hours. Include sinks, changing places, and climate control.

Kudos to the Mayor's speechwriters who not only made the obligatory #1 and #2 jokes, but also talked about having place to go "in a pinch".

EDIT: The councilmember mentioned deliveristas, street vendors, children, pregnant people and unhoused, but did not mention disabled people and they really should have. Disabled people who use mobility aids are among those who have the WORST time finding a public bathroom due to inaccessibility.

I hadn‘t come across the expression “sewer socialism“ before. As it goes when you hang a new word on something (at which @pluralistic himself is famously skillful) — you had a sense of what it was and what it‘s good for, but what a difference it makes when you have a name for it, that you can point to, talk about, and describe in depth.

More sewer socialism please, in every community, everywhere in the world.

"...[F]or those of us who have the luxury of not being in the trenches, it’s a good time to start talking about what a specifically socialist approach to municipal government might look like, especially when it comes to technology.

Fortunately, we have a historical precedent to help us think through this question. As Eric Blanc has argued, the experience of Milwaukee’s “sewer socialists” in the early twentieth century holds lessons for our current moment. Significantly, sewer socialism is a tradition that Mamdani himself has cited as inspiration. “Sewer socialism, to me, represents a belief that the worth of an ideology can only be judged by its delivery,” he said in an interview earlier this year.

The basic insight of sewer socialism is bringing people into your politics by improving their lives in obvious ways. “You win someone’s trust through an outcome” is how Mamdani puts it. The sewer socialists of Milwaukee made the case that municipal ownership of systems like sanitation, water, and power could deliver services more efficiently and more equitably than private ownership. They solved practical problems for their constituents while constructing working examples of a postcapitalist political economy in miniature.

The same method can be applied to the internet. Call it “digital sewer socialism.” Socialist elected officials in New York, Seattle, and beyond can craft policy interventions that increase the quality of life for residents by addressing the difficulties that arise in their relationship with technology. These interventions can be carried out in such a way that, by modeling socialist principles, they win wider support for socialist ideas."
