  1. I have more serious academic research to do using the new Scottish Privy Council Records database. But I couldn't resist looking up some ancestors. Here is my 8xg-granddad, not doing too well in 1692, after refusing to take the Oath of Allegiance. spcr.ac.uk #SPCR #ScottishPrivyCouncilRecords #ScottishHistory #History #17thCentury #SeventeenthCentury #Edinburgh #DH #DigitalHumanities #Databases #Genealogy #FamilyHistory

  2. Wish my brain would stop thinking "I'll just look up another 16th/17th century testament (will and/or inventory) to study in ScotlandsPeople" when the website is still down! Hope it comes back ok after latest upgrade / revamp. And hope it's not as disastrous as some other website revamps inc SP. #HistoricalResearch #ScottishHistory #Scotland #History #Genealogy #FamilyHistory #ScotlandsPeople #website #websites #16thCentury #17thCentury #SixteenthCentury #SeventeenthCentury #Wills #Inventories

  4. And on the subject of #witchcraft, again from #SouthLeith, now 2 May 1644 “Ordains to mak intimaone that none use any kind of torturing aganst any of yose who are suspect of witchcraft and for ye present in prisone.” #ScottishHistory #Edinburgh #17thCentury #SeventeenthCentury #kirkSession

  5. More from South #Leith, among accusations of #witchcraft and arguing over #schools: “28 December 1643 - Isobell Robertsone being called (for haveing four men playing at cards in hir house in tyme of divin service) compeared and was ordained to pay 12s and was admonishit no to doe the like.” #Edinburgh #ScottishHistory #17thCentury #SeventeenthCentury #kirkSession #CardGames #GamingHistory

  6. From South #Leith #kirkSession records 16 September 1630 “Compeared ye fruite sellers & wes admonished not sell any #fruit publicklie agane on ye Sabbath under ye paine of making yer publicke repentance.” #ScottishHistory #Edinburgh #17thCentury #SeventeenthCentury

  7. Happy to be sitting up doing some more old document reading. And thank goodness again for easy colour/balance graphics processing software to make it more readable! Here a testament testamentar (Scottish will and inventory) from 1648. #HistoricalResearch #ScottishHistory #Genealogy #FamilyHistory #17thCentury #SeventeenthCentury #Will #Wills #Inventory #Inventories #Testament #Testaments #Palaeography #GraphicsProcessing #GraphicSoftware

  8. Unlike the Norton one it uses just a single copy of the original book as its source. Which may mean it is less clear to read in places. But book historian me is a lot happier with this facsimile for authenticity and provenance reasons. Note it's a bit of a whopper! 4kg and 35cm x 23 cm x 8 cm. #RareBooks #Plays #Theatre #17thCentury #SeventeenthCentury #Books #Bookstodon #Shakespeare #FirstFolio #Facsimile #BookHistory

  9. Both poring over the 400th anniversary #BritishLibrary #facsimile #Shakespeare #FirstFolio we bought. It is a very accurate reproduction of an excellent BL copy of the original. And yes we had to look up the bear stage direction. Very nice item to have, large, with sturdy hardback #binding in slipcase. #RareBooks #Plays #Theatre #17thCentury #SeventeenthCentury #Books #Bookstodon

  10. Just bought a British Library 400th anniversary facsimile copy of Shakespeare's First Folio. Absolutely isn't a need. But as a book historian, and given it's a limited edition, I'm afraid I can't pass on this. Shop around if you want to buy it because it's available much cheaper than from BL direct. #Shakespeare #FirstFolio #Bookstodon #BookHistory #Facsimile #Plays #Theatre #17thCentury #SeventeenthCentury #Books #RareBooks

  11. Here's an example of a record from it. I think this was my 11xg-granddad, revealing an approximate date of birth for him. I haven't been able to find any baptisms for children of Secretary William Fowler. #Soldiers #Travel #17thCentury #SeventeenthCentury #BritishHistory #LowCountries #Genealogy #FamilyHistory #FMP #FindMyPast #Histodon #Histodons

  12. Found in #FindMyPast "Registers Of Licences To Pass Beyond The Seas 1573-1677" (UK National Archives E 157) for soldiers going to serve overseas, especially in the Low Countries. Images and indexes. Includes soldier ages so I now have an approximate birth date for the soldier son of the royal secretary I'm writing a journal paper about. #Soldiers #Travel #17thCentury #SeventeenthCentury #BritishHistory #LowCountries #Genealogy #FamilyHistory #FMP #Histodon #Histodons

  13. Possibly not awake enough for this, but staring at a 1625 testament, looking for the previously spotted genealogical reference I need for a journal paper in progress. Found it! #ScottishHistory #17thCentury #SeventeenthCentury #History #Palaeography #Handwriting #Transcription #Genealogy #FamilyHistory #Histodon #Histodons

  14. William Lawes: Wherefore do my sisters stay?
The second #symphony, #song and #chorus from James Shirley's court #masque, The Triumph of Peace, which was performed for King Charles I at the Palace of #Whitehall in 1634.

    Richard de Winter: Irene (tenor)

  15. Something for #europeday...

Europe's Revels, a dance by John Eccles, from his interlude, Europe's Revels for the Peace, which was performed at court and at London theatres in 1697.
This image of the dance comes from The Dancing Master, Henry Playford, 1698
