  1. I'm honored to see my poem, "Tiller and Shears," appear in Issue #104 of Neologism Poetry Journal: neologismpoetry.com/January-20.

    I wrote it last spring, coming out of Jason Mitchell's "Poet's Myth" sessions and going into Christine Salvatore's "Building Worlds" workshop.

    I'm crazy proud of this piece!

  3. #ClippedSestina

    Still practising.

    Somebody gave me three random words:
    rose, gutter, emu

    This is what came out of it.

  4. Finished my attempt at a #sestina. It came out ok!

  5. Emboldened by a poet friend to try a #sestina , the choice of iambic was traditional but optional. So obviously went that way & now supping at the table of consequences.

  6. Late January, season of sorrow;
    most vicelike, the icy grasp of winter.
    Behold its wrath in the wrought-iron sky.
    Taste of its venom in fen’s creeping haze.
    And keep vigil as sunset brings darkness
    to feel the cold night steal away your bones’ warmth.

    Nothing endures long, not even the winter;
    soon, the warm Sun will again rule the sky.
    For now, rain on snow still sends up a haze;
    further obscured, the rainy night’s darkness.
    The walls of the home promise shelter, warmth,
    calm come what may, great joy or great sorrow.

    Outside, the trees stand before clouded sky,
    clothed from below in silk ribbons of haze
    phantom grey before twin shades of darkness.
    Behind the windows, the home’s ward of warmth
    blocks the night’s cold but yields before sorrow
    ever ascending to zenith in winter.

    Kindling a spark, I call forth my own haze;
    a lone fire burning against night’s darkness.
    The ember brings forth sight rather than warmth,
    the gift of a song to drive back sorrow,
    to keep summer’s hope aflame in winter:
    the raven’s call under rainy night sky.

    The ember cools; alone, I, in darkness,
    feeling my breath give away my life’s warmth.
    Laying aside the misty night’s sorrow,
    I withdraw behind walls before winter
    and the icy rain pouring from the sky
    to call up a silver, sinister haze.

    Here in my chair, with my pen, there is warmth,
    a song at its tip, reprieve from sorrow;
    balm to insulate the soul from winter;
    a new hope, feathered, singing ‘cross the sky.
    Let the night bring forth its clever haze–
    I will be the light which fears no darkness.

    Thus, the sorrow of winter in passing;
    thus, the sky, filled up with ice and with haze;
    thus, the long darkness presaging spring’s warmth.

  7. CW: "Sestina for Leigh Brackett"

    I have not seen too much of @fsvo on ye ole fedi lately, but for undisclosed reasons I was working on a sestina over the weekend, which put me in mind of Mike's superb "Sestina for Leigh Brackett":

    Remembering this: we’re really in the stars /
    But some of us are looking at the gutter.

  8. The literary #TuringTest still works!
    #ChatGPT is getting closer than last time I tried, but it still has problems writing a poem in #sestina form (although it can define it).
    It lacks one stanza and for some reason "comprehend" is displaced in the line ending in 5th stanza, and is not used in the finale.
    I have no idea why such a strict poetic pattern can't be simulated by a #llm . It really couldn't be lack of data if it knows the definition, right?
    Or is it just #avantgarde ?

  9. I can't believe I missed this going up. But...here is my enormous double #sestina culled from the writings of #JordanPeterson and other manly writers. #NickBostrom! #MickeySpillane! #MarquisdeSade! Learn how to be a #man! synchchaos.com/poetry-from-noa
