A Mosotho woman holding up a sign protesting violence against women, written in her native #Sesotho language, at a National Women's Day protest at the National University of Lesotho. The sign translates: "If you do not listen to women, we will lose patience with you."

Say what you want about #AI and #LLMs, but having them accessible to speakers of (relatively, in world-terms) lesser-known languages is a wonderful achievement, IMO: https://techcentral.co.za/haibo-ai-language-models-zulu-sotho/242367/?utm_source=MastodonAfrica

@GrahamDowns I personally think it would help #SouthAfrica|n #democracy, #civilsociety and #society in general a lot, if #SocialMedia was not dominated by American media giants and their algorithms with their dubious political and financial interests.*
That is part of the reason why I am personally supporting this project and why we plan to be here for the long run.
It would be wonderful if more and more and also a more diverse crowd of people decide this is a place for them.
Scrolling through the timeline and seeing it full of posts in #isiZulu, #isiXosa, #Sesotho etc would be a dream.
* Of course that is true for all parts of the world, but South Africa is the place I especially care about.

Google Translate is a relatively simple looking app that offers a lot of functionality. It has the ability to translate words or sentences that you type or paste into the app and can even translate text found in images. Furthermore, the app is also capable of translating the world around you, on the fly in real time using the power of Google Lens. This is an incredibly useful feature that it tends to get right a lot of times, even if you're rushing and on the move. Finally, the app offers a conversation mode that can translate a chat between two different people in real time as well.

#Sesotho, #Lesotho, #Basotho, #mmino"Meluluetsa, which means ululation, is calculated to inspire the Basotho, particularly the young generation, in the same way as actual ululating inspires warriors to acts of valour. It is an attempt to instil the spirit of patriotism into their minds and urge them to achieve participation in all spheres of development for the betterment of the country."
