While I'm posting obscure hardware woes in a time when buying hardware sucks, I need to get a server rack for my homelab. In general I know folks tend to hate wall mounted because it can hinder back access, but I don't have many options as space is limited.
Looking at https://tripplite.eaton.com/smartrack-12u-low-profile-switch-depth-wall-mount-rack-enclosure-cabinet~SRW12U. I'm hoping to buy once, cry once and get a rack that'll last a while. Currently running 12 disks in a tower and looking to move to a netapp ds4246.

The new server rack is almost alive! 🔋
It features multiple Raspberry Pis running Podman containers, a dedicated backup server, and plenty of storage — basically a self-hosted powerhouse. 🗂️
The custom PC frame at the bottom started as an OpenFrame case and now fits perfectly in the shallow rack. 🖥️
Just a few parts left… can’t wait to see it fully operational. ⚙️
Do you run your own server setup? 🪄

Ah yes, because who hasn't looked at a server rack and thought, 🥬 "Perfect for lettuce!"? When you're so done with tech that turning to farming in a 42U cabinet makes sense, it's time to question life's choices. 🤔 Just imagine the networking possibilities... of irrigation! 🚿

How janked would you say is welding a metal bracket to the case instead of trying to source the correct rails for server hardware?
Asking for a friend of course. No server cases or brackets have been harmed (yet).

Thinking about setting up a KVM. I'm sick of rearranging my rack everytime I need to access a server...
Any KVM switch recomendations? And has anyone tried #pikvm

My oven is *not* 19 inch wide and rack spacing is *not* 1.75 inches. Hm. Must be non-standard oven.
-
Why does negative space not exist? I could use some.
Anyone tipps for how to fit 933 mm (36,75 Inches) into a rack that is only 584mm (23 Inches) deep?
Will be fun to figure something out I guess...

Note to self, when building a (home lab) rack with generic rails instead of the ones the components originally shipped with, account for leaving exactly one gap hole between each of the components.
A 1-2mm rail does not fit in between 2HE servers/disk-arrays that are exactly 2HE. Especially not when you try to replicate this 3-4 times right next to each other.
Shit...
-
Anyone having a pair of these laying around?
How exactly do you mount them into a rack? Also is it true that they can get as small as 560mm? The smallest I can get them is 600mm. Am I doing something wrong or did the seller lie to me about their dimensions?!?

I've put the case in the rack. Didn't have rails, so it sits at the bottom. If I get Home Assistant working on TrueNAS, the Pi will be taken out. And if TrueNAS runs ok, the Synology will go to another place to act as a backup location. #TrueNAS #ServerRack

After completing most of my second #10inchrack which was going to house my #RaspberryPi #Kubernetes cluster I've decided to go a different route. I'm building a 1U unit to house the Raspberry Pi's, so I'll have to figure out what to do with this little guy :nkoThink:

Just cleaned and re cable managed my entire server rack... That was rough lol.
Whole thing is clean now and ready for me to put a rack mounted switch in now, looks a bit crappy because I don't have any patch cables atm which I will get when I get the switch BUT it's all managed and ready for the switch to be just dropped in!

Project #minirack is done :)
The goal was to have a nice "living room capable" 10" rack to hold my #homeasssitant box with a touch display for smart home control, a network switch and a UPS.
And no it is not living in the livingroom now, nor was it planned ;) I could have moved the network wiring to the back/inside, but in the end it needed a little nerd factor.Mostly made from laser cut plywood in #kumiko pattern that I spray painted black, and some 3D printed parts. All self designed/built except for the metal rails in the corners.
And did I mention it's ALL powered by USB-C PD internally? 😍#homeassistant #smarthome #homeapprovalfactor #lasercut #making #makeoftheday #3dprinting #serverrack #thinkcentre #diy #usbcpd

Just received a package
I had ordered a m70q gen 2 thinkcentre 1 Liter mini pc with an 11400T for some low power docker containers and VM's such as home assistant and had already printed a rack mount holder.
only to receive a P340 thinkstation tower with a 10900K instead which won't fit in my server rack.

I finally got a server cabinet! LETS GO!
-
Was just able to obtain this 26U rack for €56 including shipping 😄
The only con being a dent on one of the back panel. Now I just need to fill it with some equipment and do the cable management.
I am debating whether to go for cage nuts or for the Patchbox /Dev/Mount which are a metal alternative to the rack studs duo.

Finally got my new wooden server #rack! I can now move everything off the floor and return the office to something more respectable.
It’s a 14U 19” rack, 55cm deep, custom build from the UK. Very affordable (half the price of the ugly Startech wooden cabinets) and can be customised a ton (wood/finish, height, depth and legs/wheels).
It even got the wife approval, which is insane considering she only just convinced me to sell my 36U 100cm deep black monstrosity a year ago!

New shelf in the rack!
Eventually phasing out the tower QNAP and replacing with the rackmount one once the RMA replacement unit comes back.

Always a bunch of effort making changes to this rack but it's operational again now.
I removed the F5 BIG-IP and put an actual shelf in there now.
I still can't decommission the QNAP TS-453A because I now need to RMA the QNAP TS-464U because Bay 3 has a dead MOSFET. So much for the HDD RMA...
Anyway, this is my last change before MFF!
