The Mina the Hollower demo is now on Xbox (only until September 30!) so even though I played the demo some on the Switch, I figured I'd try some of this Xbox version on the Series X at lunch, and glad I did. Nice to use a controller for it instead of Switch joycons, for one. I guess I could've put the Switch version on the TV and used the wireless PowerA controller with it. But oh well. Anyway, if you have an Xbox, you should try this game, it's a blast. The full version comes out October 31 on all consoles.

Shady Part of Me (Multi, XPd on Series X)
As a little girl who's afraid of the light, you must overcome your fear with the help of your shadow while you traverse a surreal dream world. This game has some dark feels so be prepared.
You can definitely see the Limbo etc inspiration for this game, with some Braid tossed in with the time reversal mechanic. Using light to help your "shadow" get around is a neat trick. The puzzling is pretty decent, couple sections took me a bit to figure out but overall it wasn't too tough. The platforming feels solid as well, not floaty which is nice.
Music is good, definitely sets the mood for this experience. Goes along with good sound design, and good voice acting. I like the mostly black and white aesthetic as well. I also like that the game doesn't overstay its welcome, you can likely knock it out over one sitting, esp if you don't care about collecting all the "birds".
Overall, a good little experience. Do recommend. 👍 👍

So I rolled the credits on Indiana Jones and The Great Circle last night and, my word, what a hell of a game. They do so well with so much of the game: feel, mechanics, dialog, etc.. but there's a couple gripes I have that just manage to detract from the overall experience enough to drop it from a perfect score to 9/10.
Still, it's a damn good ride and I am glad I have a few collectibles I missed to go collect so I can continue to "be" Indy for a bit longer. Seriously, if you are a fan of the Indy movies (and you should know which movies I mean) you owe it to yourself to play this game.

Did some co-op stuff on the Series X yesterday-- beat 3D low-poly indie beatemup Breakneck City with the help of my kid. It was a blast. This game is hilarious. Captured the final boss fight here, where we finally kicked his ass. This fight was TOUGH and took us several tries. Luckily, this game was pretty good with checkpoints, etc- it feels fair to play. It's a challenge but was never overly frustrating. At least not playing together. No idea how people could solo a walkthrough of this one, though. This last boss is ROUGH.

Apparently one way of getting a bunch of achievements in games on my Series X that I've been struggling with is to have my teenage son try them. Because he's like 10x better at games than I am. He's patient and talented and even figures out the rough puzzles. He beat this game Catacomb Master last night and got basically all its achievements in no time at all. Cute, kinda glitchy little indie puzzle platformer by Desert Water Games.

Thanks to @alvan, was reminded I have Vampire Survivors on my Series X. And turns out, my kid hadn't played it. He's cleaning up now in it. Might've hooked him. Trying to knock out a tough achievement- surviving 20 minutes in the Laboratory.

Holy shit. Indiana Jones is really, really good so far. Only made it to Father Antonio so barely gotten into it but, dayum. That likeness is fairly uncanny, and Troy Baker nailed Harrison's voice so well I can only occasionally catch a couple times where it's not *exactly perfect*. It's amazing, honestly.
That opening sequence was gold. Sure, bit of fluff for us fans of the movies, but it sets the tone for the game perfectly. Gonna enjoy the hell out of this game, I can tell.

When I haven't been messing with that Yamaha receiver (I think I need a better multimeter, actually) and playing NMS/Thank Goodness You're Here on PS5, or Hellblade 2 on Series X, I've been enjoying Sludge Life on my Deck. Amusing "little" game. For something that looks pretty "simple", it sure is a battery drainer tho, lol. Hour-ish to go from 99% to 37%.

A while back I grabbed Kao the Kangaroo on my Series X on massive sale, and I realized the other day I hadn't played it yet. So I started it, and was able to actually beat a few levels (I'm NOT great at games, especially platformers, even though I love them).
Kao is a blast. Fun, challenging but not SUPER tough. I'll post a couple videos to this thread. Here's the first, which is a video of the intro cinematic right when you start the game - I'm psyched I was able to grab it.
Also, gotta give kudos to the Xbox app being able to sync the captures to my phone & provides a quick, easy way to edit the videos really well (since they have to be small to post here - less than 100MB).

Hauntii (Multi, XPd on #SeriesX via #GamePass ) Explore the afterlife searching for the shards of your memories, and haunting many of the denizens therein, as you attempt to ascend.TL;DR - This is a pretty twin stick "shooter" that has some depth and covers some deep subjects in a thoughtful way. Well worth the 8 or so hours.
This is an interesting take on the twin stick shooter. As a ghost, you have the ability to shoot .. spirit energy? at things. Most of the "demons" you can destroy with it. Some, however, you can "haunt" or possess which allows you to use their abilities. You can also haunt things in the environments which plays into the puzzle part of the game.
Speaking of the environments, this game is mostly various shades of monochrome which goes well with the "hand drawn" art style. Think Limbo or Obra Dinn but with some color instead of straight black and white. Plenty of variety in the places you get to explore. This is all backdropped with some excellent music that really suits each level and is tailored well to certain situations along the way.
There's plenty of variety in the mechanics too. Being able to possess stuff makes for a bunch of different environmental interactions. Control a ladybug to climb to the top of a tree to collect things, for ex. And there's a nice array of minigames, though some of them are harder than they need to be due to the 3/4 perspective/the way some things handle as you control them. It's not super frustrating, but does detract from the enjoyment a tad.
Most of the narrative is told through pantomime and simple drawings. There is some text interactions to help give more depth. It does convey some deep subject matter pretty well, considering.
I hadn't heard much about this game before it showed up in Game Pass, but I'm very glad I decided to check it out. I suggest you try it too. 👍 👍

Figment: Journey Into the Mind [AKA just Figment] (Multiplatform, XPd on Series X via Game Pass)As Dusty, embodiment of Courage in the mind of a father who's in a coma after a car crash, pick up your wooden sword and fight off the fears (and endure some wicked bad puns) that have manifested due to the trauma.
A fairly by the book puzzle platformer, Figment stands out for a few reasons. The heady subject matter of mental illness. The overly colorful world. The musical numbers each fear taunts you with as you fight them. Fart clouds.
This is an older game that popped up in Game Pass and looked amusing so I gave it a shot. I was not disappointed, it is quite amusing even as it takes you on a journey through a mind shattered by trauma. It's not overly long, about 6 hours, which is good as some of the voice acting can get a bit grating after a while. Various different puzzle types keep it from getting stale.
The stand out moments are the musical numbers the various fears serenade you with. They are actually decent, witty and well sung. You end up tapping your toes along with em as you work to defeat em.
All in all, a nice little game to put a few hours into and enjoy. 👍

You awaken at the bottom of a mythical tower filled with various divided peoples, all with different languages to decipher. Your task is to break down the barriers between the peoples and restore harmony and the tower at the same time.
I sure did enjoy this game. I have always liked how words work, the meanings they acquire etc. The "languages" in this game, while minute in word counts, still succeed in making your brain work fairly hard to parse the meanings, especially when you have to translate conversations between 2 of them. They all have a different syntax. It's actually quite impressive.
The basic gameplay loop is to explore each area until you've come across all the words used by the people there. You will be keeping notes which also function as your "guesstionary", ie: you draw pictures of things that you can assign words to. If you get all the words matched up to pictures on a pair of pages, now you know those words for certain. Once you know all of them, you'll be able to understand spoken or written instructions which will help you to progress to the next level of the tower.
There is no combat, as such. There are a few sections where you can instant fail tho. They aren't overly frustrating as the checkpoints are generous.
I like the "simple" art style. Lots of bright colors. Not always bright, or cheerful tho. Music is an excellent pairing to the settings as well.
There were a few places where I got stuck not exactly knowing what I should be doing next. There's no "breadcrumbs" so you have to figure out what to do and so I ran in circles for a while, lol. My played time according to Xbox is 19 hours. Didn't seem that long.
