  1. McGill University invites applications for the Canada Impact+ Research Chairs intended to attract leading researchers currently working and residing outside Canada.

    If you are considering applying and are working in software engineering or cybersecurity (or both!), please contact me.

    Note that the deadline is very tight.

  2. Join me in beautiful New Zealand!

    The department of #ComputerScience and #SoftwareEngineering at University of Canterbury is opening multiple positions at the Lecturer/Senior Lecturer level (equivalent to Assistant/Associate Professor).

    Apply by 22 February: jobs.canterbury.ac.nz/jobdetai

  3. I don't talk enough about DRUIDE, the language for articulating design uncertainty that @mounadhaouadi designed for her MSc thesis. It's a very good synthesis of concepts for describing the uncertainty that people have during the process of modelling.

    Here is the paper, and there is even a 1 minute video of me talking about it: jot.fm/contents/issue_2021_03/

  4. Hey #ICSE2025 participants:

    Do you read and write commit messages?

    Do you have 5-10 minutes to answer a survey about rationale practices in commits?

    We would love to hear from you!

    And help us spread the word!

  7. I was just reading on a mailing list that the #ICSE2025 conference will be posting on Facebook, BlueSky, and X?

    I would be nice to have a Mastodon feed as well.

    For all conferences.

    EDIT: And voila: @icseconf

  8. We recently developed an entropy-based metric to track the consistency of coding conventions used in test suites, as one element of their quality.

    Many changes in entropy betray significant low-level events in the development of the test suite, such as the introduction of different libraries, or the progressive adoption of new naming conventions.

  9. "Threats to validity" sections in papers are not always that insightful...

    What about trying something else?

    We discuss a detailed proposal in "Communicating Study Design Trade-offs in Software Engineering", to appear in the new TOSEM "Future of Software Engineering Track".

  11. There are three Fediverse apps for software engineering:

    * ForgeFriends forgefriends.org/

    * ForgeFlux forgeflux.org/

    * Vervis vervis.peers.community/

    AFAIU, the idea seems to be to allow people to interact across different social coding platforms.

    Basically do for GitHub, what Lemmy does for Reddit or what Mastodon does for Twitter.

  12. Last week I gave a talk on the sustainability of software research #artifacts. One main point was that acknowledging the tools/research we reuse contributes to their #sustainability. So here we go: the following studies were most helpful for reflecting on this topic:

  13. Denouncing the #plagiarism of our 2018 TSE article using #TorturedPhrases.

    Our "statistically significant" results become "factually momentous". "Very low coverage" turns to "incredibly near to the ground coverage".

  14. #Introduction

    I'm a #ComputerScience professor at McGill University. Interested in software technology, software engineering research, computing education, and information privacy. I maintain the JetUML open-source #UML #Diagram tool (jetuml.org/).

    I'm also a member of @SIGSOFT and help administer this server.

  15. If some starting #SEResearchers who wants to work on performance is interested in submitting to the #ICPE Data Track, I am willing to help / mentor.

    I am a co-author on 4 of the 6 papers listed as examples in the data challenge, so I think I have some (undeserved?) creds related to this topic.

  16. @seresearchers, if one was looking for a Java OSS project with extraordinarily many and structurally complex unit tests, which ones would you look at first?

    Is there a good way to query this using BigQuery or in GHTorrent?
