Daniel FloydDas Grosse Concerte im Gewandhaus zu Leipzig am 6. November 2025 umfasste drei Werke aus einem Zeitraum von etwas mehr als hundert Jahren zwischen der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts und dem späten 19. Jahrhundert. Dieses Programm im Rahmen der Mendelssohn-Festtage bestand aus prägnanter, komplexer Musik, die Transparenz erfordert, um alle Feinheiten hörbar zu gestalten. Der 21. Gewandhauskapellmeister, Andris Nelsons, leitete das Gewandhausorchester souverän durch diese abwechslungsreiche Musikcollage und bewies dabei ein Gespür für die stilistische Individualität jedes einzelnen Werks. Not fun, but still pleasurable
Fun is not the right word. It is demanding, but somehow I also find pleasure in that.

While rock climbing (outdoors, on real rocks, at real heights) I was once told that there are three types of fun: Type-1 fun is when something is fun, right now. Type-2 fun is when it’s not fun now, but is nonetheless great because of the experience, stories and learning being gained. …and then there’s Type-3 fun when nope, this is bad, mistakes have been made, and I want out of here.
I wonder if a big part of what draws me to be professional about what I do is that it’s really just Type-2 fun?

Went to the Boston Symphony this evening. Very fun program:
Stride by León, a 2020 piece dedicated to Susan B Anthony. Very deliberately chaotic piece, with a lot of fun sounds coming together especially from the percussion section. (It ends with two players playing the chimes, with different parts :chinokafu_woah:)
Piano Concerto for the Left Hand by Ravel, performed by Seong-Jin Cho (who was simply incredible live!)
The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky, with some very epic work by the percussion section. You could feel how much fun they were having in this concert.
