Jahrhunderts.

  3. A quotation from Vaclav Havel

Hope, in this deep and powerful sense, is not the same as joy that things are going well, or willingness to invest in enterprises that are obviously headed for early success, but, rather, an ability to work for something because it is good, not just because it stands a chance to succeed. The more unpropitious the situation in which we demonstrate hope, the deeper that hope is. Hope is definitely not the same thing as optimism. It is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense, regardless of how it turns out.

Václav Havel (1936-2011) Czech playwright, essayist, dissident, politician
Disturbing the Peace: A Conversation with Karel Hvížďala, ch. 5 “The Politics of Hope” (1986) [tr. Wilson (1990)]

  4. A quotation from Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.

Beliefs must be lived in for a good while, before they accommodate themselves to the soul’s wants, and wear loose enough to be comfortable.

Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. (1809-1894) American poet, essayist, scholar
Article (1861-04), “The Professor’s Story [Elsie Venner],” ch. 30, Atlantic Monthly, Vol. 7, No. 42

  5. A quotation from Dale Carnegie

Flaming enthusiasm, backed up by horse sense and persistence, is the quality that most frequently makes for success.

    «
It takes not only humor, but sense, to enjoy a satirical story directed toward one’s self.

  11. For this one I wrote about Nightbitch (by Rachel Yoder) and sensibility. But I also let myself geek about this long and luxurious sentence that piles up imagery for days.

Come across any lovely sentences lately? (Definitely count the ones you write yourself!)

  13. There's something happening in #Persuasion about the gendered experience of pain that I find fascinating; I don't think it's just a part of #sensibility. But it's also not the argument of this chapter, so I'm trying to note it and move on. #MedHums

  14. @allisonwyss @davidtheeviloverlord @orionkidder @unami Oh. Oh! Oh! I just got why you're using that word for this concept.

    Sensibility.

It's a double entendre! Not only is it a reminder about what to include and what to exclude when writing mystery and intrigue (what the character can sense), it's also a sensible way to write tightly knit stories, as well as 1st and 3rd person close.

I'm expropriating this term. Words like this make me very happy (#author, naturally).

  16. We're talking about sensibility in my class today--the particular way a character observes the world & how that creates a sense of personality. How looking out is a reflection of the inner workings of a brain.

And I'm thinking about how it's often so iterative for me. I notice my character's sensibility and then I develop it and then I notice new things and develop them.

Do you think about sensibility? Do you build it or notice it?

  18. An Empirical Razor for Discerning Rare, False, and Faked Phenomena

In an HN discussion of whether or not the supposed oldest person to have ever lived, Jeanne Calment, was a fraud or not, I noted that the one modern social phenomenon that’s been most strongly associated with a reduction in the number of superannuated persons in a population is accurate demographic recordkeeping… See, e.g., Saul Justin Newman, “Supercentenarians and the oldest-old are concentrated into regions with no birth certificates and short lifespans” (2019). ...

  19. #DAK of a rule / law of likelihood of truth/falsity given increased sensing / recording capabilities regarding phenomena?

The idea's occurred to me. I doubt it's original. Spelled out here:
