  1. Morning transplanting is done 👩‍🌾💚👍
There's bok choy, sui choy, Chinese mustard greens & baby bok choy.
All transplanted to remediated soil area - it used to be lawn grass with crappy soil with too much clay. Now, I'm growing food on it 😁

  3. @khusky and I have been collecting olives today. We collect by hand rather than hit the branches with sticks or use machinery. It takes much longer and is not as efficient but in a funny sort of way is quite meditative and rewarding. 60kg collected so far and maybe another 150kg+ to go.

  5. Every time I try to grow carrots I just end up with these pathetic stunted things. Any ideas why they just don't grow for me? Have tried in raised beds and most recently in potato bags using a light sandy compost mix but same results every time.

  7. CW: Live & cooked shrimp

@SeaFury Successful shrimping, yesterday 😊❤️👍It is a good time for catching them in local waters. These shrimps are quite plentiful in the Saanich Inlet area.

  11. Bit of advice needed please good folk of Mastodon

First time home growing potatoes, these are Maris Peers I just harvested. About 90% of them have these scabs on them. They feel firm so I think they are surface blemishes. But can they be eaten with some selective peeling or is the crop a total loss?
Any tips on preventing this from happening?

  13. It has rained 36mm in 2 days. We have collected 7200L, be 120 days of self-sufficiency, be 4 months. Nature is nice.

Yes, the house consumes ≈60L/day/4persons, be 15L/day/person, which is not a lot!

  14. My granddaughter started kindergarten this fall. The first week they had an info session and drill on what to do if a *bear* gets into the school. How to hide, how to be quiet, how to look after each other, how to stay safe. Obviously this was coded for a shooter so that 4 and 5 year olds could understand it and not be terrified by an unknown danger. I am in Canada. You can't even imagine how much this pisses me off.
In rural Canada, most households have guns for hunting and livestock protection, at least almost everyone that I know. We have gun ranges and gun clubs, gun camps and classes. When my youngest was 14, she attended a week long firearms camp for teens 13 to 19. I was there the whole time because I helped a filmmaker film the whole week. I participated in shooting skeet, black powder, 300's, and 22's. We also learned basics of archery, survival shelter and fire building. Each day consisted of classroom in the morning, field work in the afternoon. The kids really learned a ton of safety and survival skills from a variety of older people with hunting, farming, and survival skills. One instructor was an author and pilot that had survived a small plane crash in the wilderness in winter for weeks and his skills in doing so. The kids that passed the written test and demonstrated they understood safety and function with firearms got their acquisition and possession license. The division was aprox. 50/50 girls to boys. This is an important and significant point.
The marked difference between our 2 countries with regard to firearms is the culture. The kids were never ever taught that you need a gun to protect yourself from "a bad guy". There was no swaggering around with pistols. There were no photo-ops posing with guns. There was no toxic masculinity. There was no "othering" of people into good and bad. There was no teaching the kids that "someone is going to come for you so you better be ready". The kids were taught self reliance, hard core skills, and how knowledge is what will keep you safe. They were taught that the guns were another tool in the toolbox to be used properly and respected.
There are many more nuances to this whole topic, it would take novel length posts to cover them. But the discourse I see all over the interwebs right now just never seems to get to this point.

  16. The Indian summer we're having at the moment in Lancashire is causing our stored water to run low. I may have to move some garden water to the toilet flush tank before the weekend.

To clarify, we are of course on mains water but we like the challenge of reducing waste and making more of free resources. To this end we have a 500L tank of rainwater to flush the downstairs toilet and 10 water buts for the garden.

  18. Startled a Pacific Tree Frog while watering a honey locust seedling. I use 3.5 x 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled in the bottoms for most of my seedlings and graftlings because nursery pots are either small or expensive.

I’d like to think this is one of the tadpoles I saved when the pond dried up. But I’ve seen a dozen or so of those little frogs and they’re still brown and half this size. #permaculture. #nature. #selfsuffiency

  20. Weeding carrots must be among the most back breaking jobs, especially when they are still so small and the weeds so fast growing.
And there are some tiny self set kale plants I want to transplant, which need careful removing.
And dill has self set in the bed. And dill is combative for carrots (inhibits growth) and looks like tiny carrot plants. But I want to move them elsewhere, so can't just pull them out.

  22. #SelfSuffiency #myths, on a closer look they might just be one more way to sell a ”me against the world” hero myth for folks that want nothing more than be #heroes

The boring reality being: We are a pack species, we have evolved to do our best problem-solving communally.

  24. I wish I could say this past week has tired me out more than any other, but that's not true. I have been this tired before.. every year. 5 cords of firewood hauled and stacked. 4 cubic metres of manure wheel-barrowed and spread. 9 raised beds prepared for planting season. Seedlings and plants starts put out. Bees checked and fretted over. Fences repaired. All of this during no-mow May. Soon it will be taming the jungle as well. It's not easy living in the country and working on self-sufficiency. And of course none of us are totally self reliant. But we do what we can. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

  29. Part of my ongoing local #decolonization efforts include helping people learn that insects can also be #food & to not feel grossed out about eating them. Many #insects are #edible - even #invasive ones(which I encourage voraciously eating) & provide a good source of #proteins too.
