What’s a good #note app? I’ve can Bing things, but wonder what’s actually useful.
- must be #selfhostable in #Kubernetes (I can make k8s descriptors out of Docker Compose if need be, but prefer a helm chart)
- I don’t mind paying, but I’m not paying a subscription for hosting stuff myself
- must be possible to make simple notes + task lists easily
- must be possible to bulk-upload data
- must be possible to attach images + PDFs
- images and PDFs must be searchable (using OCR; I’m scanning in dead-wood shit)
- must have folders for organizing a LOT of data (literally tens of thousands of notes with PDFs/images)
- data must be in my hosting, not on (all) devices, but should be searchable from devices
- something #Notion-y would be nice but is not a requirement
- I’d love to be able to import a (15 GB) Evernote export
#AnyType is actively k8s-hostile, #AFFiNE doesn’t index PDFs and seemingly does not allow custom bulk imports, #Evernote got hit with the enshittification-stick and not self-hostable, #Obsidian seems to be client-first. But that’s the sort of solution I’ve been looking at.
I’ve read https://selfh.st/alternatives/notion/ and https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/gx538n/self_hosted_notion_alternative/ and looked at AnyType + AFFiNE is depth.

There's a reason I've been recommending folks reliant on #Signal to familiarise themselves with #jabber (or #xmpp if you like).
Signal relies on one of the companies they aim to protect us from: amazon. If amazon goes down, so to does Signal.
Is that bad? Yes. Yes it is. It is very bad. You just had the faintest hint of a whiff of what that means today.
Jabber, on the other hand, is a #SelfHostable decentralised service that has been in continuous use and development since the 90s.
With my jabber server (#Prosody) and my #android client (#Conversations), my friends and family and I do everything we can do on Signal - text, quote reply, search, send media and files, voice and video chat... and it's all #e2ee end-to-end-encrypted, running on hardware and software we have total control over.
Go explore the world of options with Jabber!

Fedifriends, are there any #selfhostable #opensource "Trust Center" projects, where you can automatically track and publish security controls for certifications such as ISO27001 or SOC?

We need a new #InstantMessenger something that's not #WhatsApp, #Telegram or #Signal.
There should be indexers that act as a phone books, but at the same time, people can bypass that by directly adding contacts.
All chat history and groups are peer 2 peer and are stored like torrents with the extended backup being self-hostable.
Recent chat history (up to 30 days) can be stored on the indexer, though they're encrypted and so the server is blind to what's in them. They should explicitly be opt-in.
Whenever a user adds a new client (device) to private chat groups, all conversations recipients should have to approve in order for them to see the chat history.
It should also have all the bells and whistles, like emoji, stickers, groups, channels, etc.

I've been working on a side project to help me organise my collection of gifs. It's a #SelfHostable #gif and #meme manager called Gifable. Check it out https://www.gifable.club. 🌈

@humanetech @dachary I think nobody will move off of #github as long as there is no #federation support in any of the #selfhostable alternatives!
As soon as there is, I think people will start moving away. Not many, but some. Federation is a must-have, because otherwise creating accounts just for reporting a bug is just too much of a task for the average user and sometimes even for more "advanced" users. I certainly would be much happier if I could just use my own instance and create a bugreport/issue/etc on some project hosted somewhere else!
Of course, #sourcehut does already provide everything we would need. Also, Email is THE workflow with #git IMO. But I acknowledge that its just not enough for most users and they want some kind of #forge and bling-bling website like github. I do not blame them. -
