Time for #introduction... first time on SoMe in 12 years. I live collectively on southern funen, DK, trying to be parent, activist, antifascist and educator in the expanding ecological crisis. Part time working payed as educator at folk high schools and the rest of my time I am homeschooling and caring for kids and community.

I really like unschooling, because it meshes with my experience that kids are natural learners. But it can really throw people off; they say things like how will kids learn if they don't go to school? The unschooling approach is to first take the brakes off that are preventing learning. Things like forcing kids to learn topics on the school's schedule, grading, and limiting movement for good chunks of the day. These things can seem necessary and effective, but tend to limit self-motivated learning. And they are no fun! The more these pressures are lifted, kids have time to explore their own interests, which leads to rich learning.

With unschooling, there is still plenty for adults to do to help support kids with learning. We can express interest in whatever they find cool. We can help when they get stuck or something is more difficult than expected. And we can explore our own interests and share them with the kids. The kids will want to see what you're up to.

I wrote a post about small, self-directed groups for supporting each other with learning. I've spoken to others who find it hard to make progress on personal projects. I know it is a challenge for me. I think we may have a better shot if we band together. This is from The Learning Cooperatives website, https://learningcooperatives.org/guiding-principles/, in the context of kids who struggle in school. In a different environment those same kids can thrive.

I find this encouraging. If I am struggling with something, it's probably not because I'm deficient. Maybe it would help to change my environment.

@matbury @gerard_mazza #selfdirectededucation has plenty of people learning from those with more expertise. It's not all discovery learning.

@JennyAnyDot I also would love to find as robust a community of people wrestling together with how to understand, articulate and live the values of #unschooling / #selfdirectededucation in the broadest sense.

@matbury @gerard_mazza as Mazza already said and for me too, it's about consent. So #unschooling #democratic #selfdirectededucation is not about lack of guidance or instruction. Young people can and do choose to seek out that guidance and instruction.

@matbury but this study doesn't take into account where the motivation is located for the students. Are those students learning Spanish just for the research or did they choose to and did they get to choose the method as they would in #selfdirectededucation ? I wish there were more studies where students get real decision making power/responsibility for their learning. Not just 'choices' amongst some predetermined few. Also wonder how much metalearning they get from doing that over the longterm.

@gerard_mazza Hi! Have you found much #selfdirectededucation in WA? I lived there 6 years (around Three Springs) and it still comes up on my radar sometimes. Co-founded Gamechangers here in #eastlondon and was part of the Free We Grow community in #southlondon, both #selfdirectededucation and #consentbasededucation (#democraticeducation) projects for #homeducation (for now) but keen to promote this as an option everywhere.

So I'm #ActuallyAutistic, a proponent of #monotropism, a lover of #linguistics and the science of #perception, as well as #physics and #chemistry (which I teach for a living). I'm very interested in #ForestSchool and #selfDirectedEducation, and just #education in general.

My politics are probably best described as #ecosocialist (I'm a @ScottishGreens member, but I worry sometimes about some of the things associated with the wider Green movement).

I also love #tea and #veganFood, and may or may not post about these from time to time. I certainly used to.
