  1. "Country Doctor (Night Call)," Horace Pippin, 1935.

I've talked about Pippin (1888-1946) before; he was a self-taught Black American artist who took up art as a sort of therapy after being injured in WWI. He painted scenes of everyday Black American life, and what he lacked in formal training, he made up for with passion, depth, a remarkable eye for design, and a flair for storytelling and depicting people's lives.

Here we have a scene in a wooded area in the midst of a snowstorm....but a man is slowly leading a horse, pulling a wagon, through the storm. It's not just a mere depiction of a winter scene, but a tribute to the resilience and dedication of a rural doctor, trudging through the storm to someone in need.

Pippin's most popular work are his depictions of Black life, many drawn from his childhood. He also did religious paintings and some historical paintings, mostly of his WWI experiences, but also a noted depiction of John Brown going to his execution, based on descriptions from his grandmother, who witnessed it. I find his work delightful.

  2. Did I ever publicly mention I've been (slowly) working on porting my #Asteroidians codebase from #Unity to #Monogame ?

    Apparently that started June. 🙄

I spent today working on my replacement Coroutine sys, which has gotten some 👀❓from the Monogame discord.

I have specific needs for Coroutines though, for running game-simulation code over-time with my "deterministic lockstep sync" based #multiplayer architecture.
    And it keeps code tidy!

  5. no. there really isnt such a thing as "#exclusive #skillsets", only denial of access to the materials and #knowledge needed to learn those things.

no. #selftaught and #homeschooled are not "lesser" forms of #education. in fact, they can be, in my experience, faster and even more advanced ways of learning than "waiting your turn" to learn in crowded, inattentive #institutions that are more focused on their own agendas and testing for #compliance with outdated measures and standardized #thinking.

  6. Sewists advice please !

I often need to mark pattern outlines onto dark / black and stretchy fabrics.

Examples: back of crushed velvets, jersey knit, fleece, and lycra blends.

What *reliable marking* method can I use that is NOT tailors stitches.?

Every time I try chalk I end up with a smudgy mess and water / erasable ink markers seem to only come in the colour blue? 🤷🏿‍♀️

    Thanks in advance.

This feels like simple stuff but I'm confused and frustrated.

  7. Using mostly #Golang & #Javascript these days but I’m so grateful that #Python was the first language I learned.

Also, I know the #Python 2 to 3 transition was a pain but it definitely taught me about bytes 😅

Me initially: Bytes… what are those 😭

  11. I should start organizing the backlog for my home lab. First up will be figuring out what hypervisor I want to run; then some permanent infrastructure that won't be containerized such as a git server and pipeline runner; then making a VM template; then actually standing up the prod cluster.

Then comes the "migration" from my current instance to the new k8s cluster. That will be some combination of k8s deploys from YAML files and restoring some files from backup.

I plan to have a way to deploy new VMs on demand, including randomized hostnames and DNS entries, then assemble a whole group of them for k8s. Maybe I can even tinker with Ansible's dynamic groups?! Haven't done that for a while.

  12. 🚀 In today's episode of "Captain Obvious Discovers Gravity," we learn that people who teach themselves a skill might actually be good at it. 🤯 Check out Michael's "Interactive Resume" to see how he single-handedly reinvented the wheel... with a PowerPoint presentation. 😜

  13. You don’t need to know everything to begin. Start where you are—one step, one page, one terminal window. That’s how we all grow.

    #SelfTaught isn’t a lesser path. It’s the real one.

  15. "Tree of Paradise," Séraphine Louis, 1926.

Louis (1864-1942) was a self-taught painter inspired by her own intense religious faith, and stained-glass windows in her local church.

A domestic servant, first at a local convent and later by assorted bourgeois families in the town of Senlis, she painted privately on various objects until 1912, when one of her employers, an art collector, stumbled on her work and was greatly impressed. He encouraged her to work more and supplied paints and canvases for her to work on. She was launched into a world of critical and financial success...but was ill-equipped to handle it and lost most of the money she made.

By 1932 her mental health, which was always wobbly, deteriorated to the point that she had to be institutionalized. She spent the rest of her life in an institution, sadly denied any sort of artistic outlet. Today she is remembered as a significant outsider artist.

From the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

  17. CW: Selftaught/Career/Finance Woes

#SelfTaught often leaves gaps in my education; I have to take each client's situation & needs into consideration. I have to trust myself to be able to learn on the job. Often this means longer ETAs.

#ActuallyAutistic can leave me unmotivated without knowing what's expected of me; or often will force me to negotiate with a potential client when not in the right headspace (see autism Splines theory)

I value honesty and that definitely hurts my negotiation skills

  18. CW: Selftaught/Career/Finance Woes

I've tried to make #freelance work for income, and managed to barely sustain myself for several years doing so, but routine #SocialMedia (namely #marketing) is one of those #softskills I am godawful at keeping up with

It's the same reason I couldn't generate enough interest in #Asteroidians as a game. (tbh the community management aspects of #gamedev kinda scare me)

Unfortunately when everyone has less money, freelancers are hit first

  19. CW: Selftaught/Disability Woes

    #Thread
Often I forget just how amazing some of the #programming systems I have made for #Asteroidians are. Absolutely something that could be turned into a viable career, even outside #gamedev

Being #ActuallyAutistic I seem to struggle with the #softskills necessary to turn the #SelfTaught skills I've developed into something I can live off of

Its very invalidating, internally I seem to blame society or #capitalism which is not constructive
