  1. Embarking on a new chapter, attending a new school in a new-to-you city can be exciting, scary and lonely all at the same time. Sometimes it is finding comfort in something as simple as #walks to a luxury bar of soap and a home goods store that can slowly open you up to discovering that the new city you live in has become a #home.

This is Vanessa's story of such a journey of self discovery in St. John's, Newfoundland.

  2. The Practice Doesn’t End

There is no graduation from this practice. Not because you're doing it wrong. Because the practice is not the path to something else. It is the thing itself. The ongoing, never-quite-complete project of knowing yourself honestly and responding to what you find. The work and the living are not sequential. They are the same thing.

  3. A quotation from Sue Grafton

We all need to look into the dark side of our nature — that’s where the energy is, the passion. People are afraid of that because it holds pieces of us we’re busy denying.

Sue Grafton (1940–2017) American novelist, screenwriter
Interview (1997-02-07) by Jeffrey Zaslow, “Straight Talk,” USA Weekend magazine

  5. The Prison of Me

I have become who I do not wish to be.
Upon waking this morning I could not find me.
Instead a stranger had taken up residence
beneath machine gun towers on a razor wire fence.

Somehow while I slept a prisoner I became,
captured naked  and exposed, a number for my name.
The cumulative refuse of years like a disease
had suddenly overwhelmed my inner faculties.

The circles I ran in turned around again,
enclosing me in my own hoary skin.
In what putrid lab had this creature taken shape
who now inhabited a body with no escape?

But I must confess that these bars were of my own making.
My subtle declination left me ripe for the taking.
And so in this prison I will forever be
until I learn to love the me that most frightens me.

  10. The One Life-Changing Advice I’d Give… Takes Just Two Words 🌱

If you had to give one life-changing tip, what would it be?

If I had to give just one life-changing tip, it would be this:

    Know yourself.

    That’s it.

It sounds simple, but it may be one of the hardest things we’ll ever do.

We spent years trying to understand the world…

But how much time do we spend understanding ourselves?

    What truly matters to us?

    What are our strengths?

    What are our weaknesses?

What kind of life do we actually want—not the one society expects us to live?

When you know yourself, decisions become clearer.

You stop comparing your journey with everyone else’s.

You become less influenced by opinions and more guided by your values.

The ancient Greek philosopher Socrates is often associated with the phrase, **”Know thyself.”** Thousands of years later, I believe it is still one of the most powerful pieces of advice ever given. Socrates

Because the greatest discovery in life isn’t discovering the world…

    It’s discovering who you are.

💭 What do you think is the most life-changing advice anyone can receive?
