    Deep Fear #SegaSaturn
    Developer: System SaCom
    September 1998

I cannot empathically implore you enough, if you enjoy classic Resident Evil games, then Deep Fear is worth experiencing.

Set aboard an underwater research facility, an unknown contagion causing horrific mutations is spreading across the facility.

Bad line reads and questionable vocal direction underpin a solid horror experience, with some great enemy design and cutscenes involving body horror.

This isn't a survival game, despite the setting, and mechanics. Ammo and basic healing items are infinitely available. Even the oxygen limits are comfortable to work around.

Some of the triggers for events are a little wonky, with needing to get into the right position to start, and certain rooms have enemies right in front of you, making it hard to draw your weapon and fire before they start attacking.

There is a lot more character and heart to this game than I could possibly expect.

  5. The online functionality for two Japanese-exclusive Saturn SegaNet games, Dragon's Dream and Habitat II, has been reverse engineered! But the hacker said Japanese/English translators are needed now. Gregori's story has the details:

  6. I appreciate that Deep Fear gives a reason for why the player character is immune from the infectious parasite that is mutating everyone aboard the Deep sea research facility.

During the game, he has a cold.

    That's it in a nutshell.

It's silly, but it is often a question that comes to my mind whenever I play games that involve viruses or parasites as the infection vector and every enemy in the game uses you as a chew toy.

  7. So, I have been playing Deep Fear for the #SegaSaturn and man, this game really starts off on the wrong foot.

I am a little obsessed with title cards, whether they be film or games. First impressions are important after all.

The wife ( @EmmalenaLEllis ) and I jokingly make snap judgements on RomComs based on how much effort has gone into the title reveal for a movie. Is it a generic font? Have they done a quirky reveal? Is the title just... Lame? We'll still watch it, but we like to joke about how much of the budget went on the typography.

Deep Fear to me gives me first time playing with Photoshop vibes and messing with using the Emboss function. Tweaking sliders with random abandon until it looks "cool" to designer. A part of me loves it for how 'meh' it is.

Another thing I enjoy in games is when I find typos. Deep Fear didn't disappoint, with a door to a storage room which properly says "STRAGE". Love to see it.

  8. New blog post time!

This week's game is Battle Monsters, a fighting game that sometimes gets mistaken as a "Mortal Kombat clone", but is actually much different and far more interesting. Silly characters, grimy aesthetics, and even a bit of platform fighting made this a pleasant surprise:

    Enemy Zero #SegaSaturn
    Developer: WARP
    1996

Set aboard a space ship returning to earth, Laura awakes from hyper sleep early due to an emergency.

It's a cliché, but a solid one, and even though the overall plot is reminiscent of many sci-fi films, it delivers the story competently.

The primary gimmick of the monsters being invisible adds an amazing tension that many will find more frustrating than compelling. Detectable by a sensor that beeps as they get closer. If stereo sound was a thing in this game, i didn't notice it, but my hearing is a bit funky as it is. When multiple enemies are present it can get confusing and a little overwhelming.

Add the limited saves and loads and it can be an infuriating experience, especially as the game's pace is slow, with the majority of it being cutscenes that cannot be skipped.

Despite this, the more i played it, the more I enjoyed it. It's an acquired taste. Not for everyone, but worth a shot for the curious.

  15. I have been working on the Spooptober shortlist of games, and i can at least give an update for some of the games I intend to play over the next month (some have already been played, but shhhhh).

Escape from Monster Manor - 3DO
    Dr Hauzer - 3DO
    Silent Debuggers - PC Engine
    Ghoul School - NES
    Enemy Zero - Sega Saturn
Shiryou Sensen War of the Dead - PC Engine
    Deep Fear - Sega Saturn
Haunting starring Polterguy - Sega Genesis
    Clock Tower 2 - PS1
    Enigma - PS1

My intent is to cover all of these games over the next month, this isn't a final order of which I will either. This also assume that I can make the time to get through all of these, some of them might be longer than I anticipate, but we shall see!

  16. RE: cupoftea.social/@ishambard/115

As I sit here and ponder on Enemy Zero, I can't help but think back to last year when I played Hellnight, a PS1 survival horror game that was published by Atlus. I think I made the error of suggesting Atlus developed it, but that was actually Dennou Eizou Seisakusho.

There is a couple of similiarities between the two. An impressively foreboding and oppressive atmosphere, the panic that is induced when the monsters are nearby.

Enemy Zero has the added pain of the main monsters being invisible. This is a concept I can get behind and whilst I despair with the game's detection system, it does a fantastic job of putting you on edge.

I daresay that Enemy Zero reminds me of something... A certain sci-fi horror movie...

    #Spooptober #HorrorGames #SegaSaturn #PS1

  17. Whilst the atmosphere of Enemy Zero is heavy and tense as all hell.

The real fear is watching your voice recorder's battery slowly trickling to nothing.

For context, in the #SegaSaturn game Enemy Zero, you have a limited number of saves and loads, via the voice recorder.
On Normal difficulty, you have 64 battery, with a save costing 4 battery and a load costing 2 battery.

Running out of battery means you have to start the game again from the beginning.

I see why there haven't been too many takers on beating this game...

    #HorrorGames #Spooptober

  21. I should note as well, that Enemy Zero's prime gimmick that is all enemies in the game are invisible to the naked eye, and you have to rely on an audio based detection device that will beep more aggressively the closer they get.

I know what some of you are possibly thinking.

What kind of suffering is this?
Apparently, this is my kind of suffering...

This is an active choice to be playing this game.

    #HorrorGames #SegaSaturn

  22. Oh. Oh boy.
    Mistakes were made.

Something I was unaware of, when going into Enemy Zero, was that saves are limited by a battery that cannot be restored. I mean, that's fine. Most survival horror games have a limited number of saves. Usually in the form of pick ups.

Where Enemy Zero crosses the line in absolute nonsense territory.
Loading a game also decreases the battery used for saving a game.

    That's... That's just malicious.

I have seen some deliberately hostile game design choices in my time, but this is going to be trying...

  23. What To Watch On YouTube Right Now – Part 156

Welcome back my readers, YouTube viewers and all others who followed this series of articles focused on YouTube videos worth watching.

Have you been searching for something fun or interesting to watch on YouTube? Do you feel bored right now and you crave for something to see on the world’s most popular online video destination?

I recommend you check out the following videos I found.

#1 Virtua Fighter anime revisited – Remember back in the 1990s when Sega struck gold with the groundbreaking success of the first Virtua Fighter game? Virtua Fighter was their first 3D polygonal fighting game and it easily attracted attention as well as tons of money from arcade gamers and later console gamers. Virtua Fighter also sparked strong sales for the Sega Saturn console in Japan. Along the way, Sega itself got involved in anime productions with their ownership of TMS Entertainment and by the year 1995, the Virtua Fighter anime TV series was launched. To be clear, the Virtua Fighter anime series was not a simple production as the creators behind it made something cohesive as well as the characters worth following. To learn more about the said anime, watch the GTV Japan video below.

#2 A look at the legacy of Reggie Lewis – When the late Reggie Lewis first entered the NBA as a rookie, the Celtics were still the best in the Eastern Conference and their famous starting five of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge were aging. During his second season, Lewis improved heavily as he replaced the injured Larry Bird, and he went on to become a very productive Celtic over the next several years. Tragedy struck in 1993 when Lewis died at age 27 and the details behind his heart condition and death are complicated to say the least. What most people did not know was that Lewis entered the NBA to lift his family (note: his mother was a drug addict) up from poverty. The legacy of Reggie Lewis is explained in detail in the video below and I encourage you all to watch it.

#3 The Creepiest Episodes of Unsolved Mysteries – Recently, YouTuber Minty Comedic Arts posted a video about the ten creepiest episodes of Unsolved Mysteries (hosted by the late Robert Stack). In that video, I saw most of the creepy episodes featured and there were a few ones that I saw for the first time. Indeed, almost all the episodes of Unsolved Mysteries can be viewed for free on YouTube and there are some that were missing due to legal reasons. Now is the time to watch Minty’s video below. Tell me if you find them creepy.

#4 American cheese in Japan – With the intensifying demand for cheese around the world, there is now a so-called battle for market share. In Japan, most cheese offered are imported and their prices have gone up significantly affecting the restaurants and local consumers. Along the way, cheese produced in the United States have entered Japan in growing numbers and it is being offered to local businesses and consumers for their consumption and cooking needs. America has key advantages with regards to production of milk and cheese and there is a renewed focus on exporting products aggressively. Watch and learn from the Nippon TV video below.

#5 The Unreleased Marvel 2099 Video Game of the 1990s – Thirty years ago, I read a video game magazine and got excited over the news about an official video game based on the Marvel 2099 comics franchise. I already read lots of issues of Spider-Man 2099, X-Men 2099, Ravage 2099, Punisher 2099, Doom 2099, and the 2099 Unlimited quarterly series. That said, I was delightfully surprised that the Marvel 2099 game was set for release on PlayStation. Then as time passed by, nothing happened and the unreleased game was forgotten. To find out exactly what happened, go watch the in-depth video below.

    https://youtu.be/b0WnJYJ8SZ4?si=tKguTtcPuwIrhl1g

#6 Chopping Mall reaction videos – How many times have you seen a horror movie or a cinematic misadventure that happened inside a shopping mall? In 1986, the low-budget techno-horror movie Chopping Mall (original title: Killbots) was released and it had a lot of scenes filmed inside the Sherman Oaks Galleria (which was also a location for Commando and Fast Times at Ridgemont High) in California. What makes Chopping Mall unique is its concept of security robots going rogue and harming people which brings back vibes of The Terminator. In today’s age of rampant artificial intelligence (AI) development, Chopping Mall has gotten more socially relevant and it has been featured in many movie reaction and retro review videos on YouTube. I found for you guys and gals the more engaging videos of the said movie.

#7 Adults Who Went to the Extreme for Disney and Buried Themselves with Debt – What is the worst thing you can do with your time and money with regards to entertainment from the woke Disney company? A few years ago, a survey found that 24% of all Disney-goers accrued debt during their trips along with 45% of parents with children (aged below 18). To be very clear, visiting a Disney theme park with the family is very costly and the very expensive rates on the food, transportation, accommodations, souvenirs and services related with Disney won’t fade away. Even with those painful prices, there still are certain adults who put themselves at huge financial risks because they could not restrain themselves from enjoying anything Disney. The Disney adults are real, and they lack discipline on spending. In the long run, these people are morally and spiritually lost. You better not follow their bad examples, and you can find out why by watch the informative video below.
