Going Clubbing…
Over recent years, especially since I retired in 2015, I’ve spent more time on my photography. I chose for a long time not to engage with camera or photography clubs; avoiding the structural and competitive aspects. More recently, I felt the need from some additional challenge and last night, at the start of the new season, I joined my local club, which meets in a nearby village.
Joining a photography club is more than simply turning up, and as the moment approached I found I had to consider printing too. I had never previously printed, always preferring a screen presentation. Now, I needed to print and also mount my images.
I looked at printers of various types and discounted them, especially inkjet printers which whom I’d had a consistent history of blockages and failed prints. A friend mentioned a local person with a high-spec inkjet printer and a reputation for quality, and I ordered a trio of A3 prints on 310gsm lustre finish paper.
Then, of course, I erred. I bought a cheap(ish) bevel cutter for the mounting card and entirely messed up, with curved straight edges and even a little blood! I confessed to a photographer friend, who invited me round to try again on his own bevel cutter. My three mounts were done so easily with the right kit. Another order placed. photography club isn’t cheap, lol, but next time will be better.
Anyhow, with my three newly mounted prints (A3 mounted on 50x40cm mounts) I entered club life. The first evening was a peer-judged internal competition. I placed first and joint second. The next test is going to be the external judge. It can only go down from here. 🙂
1st placeJoint 2ndUnplaced (but still nice)Ultimately, this was a really interesting time for me. Printing was new, competitive photography was new, and I had no idea what sort of subject or composition would be found attractive. I know what I like, but what do “they” like? I probably haven’t entirely worked it out yet, but I’m looking forward to expanding my portfolio (ooh-er missus)
