"Iedere patiënt heeft officieel recht op een second opinion; een tweede mening van een onafhankelijke arts binnen hetzelfde specialisme als de behandelend arts. En hoewel wordt gedacht dat dit vooral specialistische ziekenhuiszorg betreft, is dit soms ook bij de huisarts aan de orde"

"Het recht op een second opinion geldt voor alle vormen van zorg, dus ook voor de psycholoog, fysiotherapeut of tandarts. De procedure is:
1. Vertel je arts/zorgverlener dat je een tweede mening wilt en vraag om een verwijzing. Hij/zij is verplicht hieraan meewerken, tenzij er zwaarwegende redenen zijn om dit niet te doen.
2. Regel zelf een second opinion bij een andere arts/zorgverlener: overleg dit met zowel de eerste als de tweede hulpverlener en/of kijk voor alternatieven bijvoorbeeld op zorgkaartnederland.nl.
3. Vraag je medische dossier op bij je behandelend arts, zodat je dit kunt meenemen, of opsturen, naar de tweede zorgverlener.
4. Bespreek het dossier met de tweede zorgverlener/arts. Hij/zij beoordeelt je dossier en geeft advies. Dit laatste kan ook telefonisch of digitaal.
