After a round of research, I'm now ready to start rewriting my latest Japanese story. The manuscript currently stands at 73,000 characters, roughly 35,000 words, which is novella length, but I expect it to grow to short novel length during the rewrite.

German as the language of mathematics.
It allows for long composite words, which still have some concrete, tangible meaning. Its sentences can be complex yet they remain intuitive. And the mature writer can throw in concrete everyday notions, slang, to give added meaning to an abstract concept.
van der Waerden is a master of all of these.
(I live, work and write in English, and I love English and its writers with all my heart. Interestingly, my favourite English novelist is Joseph Conrad, whose native language was Polish.

But this is a good example of how meaning is a moving target. A consensus, not an objective fact.
This becomes very obvious when learning a second language. Especially when moving beyond vocab for everyday objects into more abstract concepts.
IMHO second language learning is as essential as maths or reading to a well rounded education - received or autodidactic. It's a weakness in the anglophone world that it's not always part of our curriculum.

I took spansih in almost every year it was available to me K-12. I've always viewed language as important. People would ask me "Taylor, why are you studying spanish? It's pointless, study math instead or literally anything. You are a genius and live in the US. English is all you'll ever need"
Well today I was working on a very time sensitive project and had to drain a lot of boiling water very quickly. I had a lot to do and we have these very large yellow lids. I had only a few seconds and the only person standing nearby was a Romanian that speaks no English and no German. She speaks Romanian and Portuguese. Close enough, I hoped. I looked her in the eyes and said "Amarillo", she reached down and gave me exactly what I needed.
It is intensely important to speak more than one language. A great deal of the Latin in Spanish can be found everywhere from Portuguese to Croatian. I live in Germany now but I would honestly argue that even in the US, having a second language is one of the most important skills you could ever have.

I'm at a conference and I got called on by the speaker. But I didn't want to talk and reveal my accent and have everyone act weird about me being foreign so I just did this and he called on someone else :

This can be so very true. I took French in early 1980s as total immersion. We spoke French only, all day, and at night, I would call my wife at home and could not speak English suddenly, many words were not there.
