We went to a performance of Mahler 7 at Seattle Symphony tonight, Xian Zhang conducting. So much exquisite clarity, Jim said the performance was in the French orchestra style for a Mahler symphony, not Austrian nor German. The orchestra dedicated tonight’s performance to the memory of the late Speight Jenkins, impresario of Seattle Opera for over 30 years.

Heard a terrific concert tonight, Xian Conducts Gershwin at Seattle Symphony with Hélène Grimaud piano, concerto in F. Her encore was a reflective piece, like an elegy, by Ukrainian composer, Valentin Silvestrov. We had attended the open rehearsal this morning, and this performance was dazzling. Porgy and Bess, and finishing with An American in Paris. Jazzy brass, lively winds, great cooperative spirit.

Attending last night’s concert: all as May says. McGegan’s performance informed by erudition & practice was well promoted with the Symphony Players’ exquisite & enduring energy. Wowed by the motets and their arrangements, we didn’t expect so complete a staging of “Dream.” Astonishing in its support for Shakespeare’s humor and insight into his critiques of the pastoral genre, this performance breathed life into Mendelssohn’s own enchantments.

We attended Seattle Symphony last night. Thomas May's review and Pendleton's photos accurately describe this interesting and well attended performance. We do not care for Shostakovich, especially large bombastic, and repetitive, orchestral works. Jim said the 5th symphony is a real showpiece for players, and the orchestra IS better than ever. Zhang's program notes about the orchestra's status indicate her pleasure and respect for the musicians here.

Corey Robin discusses philosophers, Marxism and food. I really like the part about the excellence in food, especially after a very disappointing lite supper at the Seattle Symphony last night. Mediocre does not even begin to describe our meal. What happened to Seattle food scene? IMO high rents killed the cooks.

We just got home from an amazing night out: attended a performance of Seattle Symphony . It was the premiere of the “acoustic” score of the animated film Flow by director Gints Zilbalodis. Led by associate conductor Sunny Xia, scored by acclaimed composer Rihards Zaļupe, it was the full orchestra with extensive percussion section. The hall was nearly full, enthusiastic. Director and composer were both there.

Jim and I went to #SeattleSymphony today, the first time in over 5 years (we had been subscribers). SS offered 20% off tickets for David Robertson conducting the orchestra and Chorale in Franz Josef Hayden's Creation. Breathtaking. Players were stunning, singers brilliant; noteworthy is Christopher Humbert Jr, whose clear bass baritone went straight to my heart. Nicholas Phan, tenor, and Heidi Stober, soprano substituting for Susanna Phillips contributed their considerable musicianship. ❤️ ❤️ 🎆
