South of Seaton Carew in NE England, where the huge sandy beaches give way to a rocky area along the north side of the estuary to the River Tees.
This is the North Gare, the opposite side of the Tees as this point known as the South Gare.
Always wondered what 'gare' actually meant and only today did I discover it refers to a triangular piece of land or a projecting spit of land jutting out into water.
Here at Teesmouth, the North Gare and South Gare describe the triangular or tongue-like projections of land and sand dunes on either side of the River Tees estuary mouth, so, there you go!
The North Gare made international news a few years ago as being the place where 'canoe man' John Darwin, faked his own death during a staged canoeing accident, ostensibly to collect life insurance money and escape heavy debts.
His 'disappearance' sparked a huge search and rescue operation from this beach.

On the extensive sand dunes of the North Gare, south of Seaton Carew and near where the River Tees meets the North Sea.
If you like big landscapes with big skies, this is a place worth visiting, especially at low tide.
This area is part of the Teesmouth National Nature Reserve and it is Co Durham's most southerly stretch of coast.
The impressive dunes hereabouts owe their existence to marram grass, sometimes called 'beachgrass'.
Without this plant's important stabilising influence, the huge banks of sand would be at the mercy of the wind and waves.
The root systems bind loose sand together, trapping windblown sand and creating sheltered habitats for other plants and wildlife.#coastal #sanddunes #durham #teesmouth #seatoncarew #landscape #beach #photography

UK: #LittleTern fledglings hit record numbers https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ce98pl5943zo
140 of the birds had developed wing feathers large enough for flight at #SeatonCarew in #Hartlepool this year. The numbers follow an improving year-on-year trend. Earlier this month the #birds set off on their annual three-month migratory journey to The #Gambia in west Africa. Last year the team recorded 125 fledglings at Seaton Carew, whereas in 2022 there were just 89.
