Reposting a critical tip regarding #searchability from @[email protected] - particularly aimed at MSM outlets that simply tag their articles with #press.
https://mstdn.social/@feditips/108380464458646658
"Do you want your posts to be seen by as many people as possible on here?"
If so, it's important to use hashtags. Hashtag searches are the main way people find posts on the Fediverse. If a post doesn't have hashtags, people probably won't see it in search results.
Don't worry about using too many tags! As long as they are relevant, it is fine to have lots of tags. Many put a long list of them at the end of the post.
Also, if you are using tags, it's important to set the post's visibility to "Public" so that the post appears in search results.
On Mastodon you can set a post's visibility by clicking the visibility icon at the bottom of the post when you're writing it (the icon looks like a globe 🌐 , lock 🔒 or @ sign).
You can set your default post visibility by logging in through the website and going to Preferences > Other > Posting Privacy, select the default you want and click "Save Changes".

as a #leftist #activist and #contentcreator who has struggled for years with rampant #censorship, #banned and #suspended accounts, etc on mainstream platforms (always and only for the heinous unforgivable sin of "female-looking nipples"), places like Mastodon and peertube are the closest I can come to posting anything without having to share a platform with nazis, antivaxxers, etc (assuming I join am instance that defederates from servers that do).
yet it's hard not to be frustrated with how few users there are on these alternative platforms, how clunky and limited the #searchability is, and especially among recent #twitter converts, how little patience the average user has for scrolling chronologically rather than have algorithms decide what posts are "more important" (more likely to cause further engagement") and show them at the top.
I want to ask this question is everyone, but again, especially among #twittermigration accounts-
when you come across a post that has a content warning you have to expand to read the rest of, truthfully, how often do you expand it?
option clarification due to poll character limits-
TM: recent Twitter migrant, aka only started using the #fediverse in the last half-year or so
non-TM: someone who has regularly used the fediverse for more than a year
auto-expand: an option on some apps that will automatically expand any CW. I have this enabled on mine, though I wish it allowed turning off auto expand on certain filters--like expanding most posts, but NOT explicit porn by the various sex workers I follow on here 😅please feel free to elaborate on your answer in a reply!

CW: extended thoughts about searchability on the fediverse
Meme I quickly made about responses to the ongoing discussion about #searchability on the #fediverse. As a #contentCreator and #activist for #toplessEquality--which gets me banned repeatedly on all mainstream platforms even when I DO censor out my heinous female nipples (see https://www.toplesstopics.org/banned for receipts!), a primary motivator for me to use platforms like #mastodon is to be able to spread the word about #GenderEquality anti- #censorship among more potential supporters. But the lack of #searchability on Masto makes this very hard. I'm dependent on existing followers to boost my posts so others following -them- can see it, etc, but for whatever reason very few of my existing followers do. I also can't really find posts by other people outside of my instance and the people I'm following--like I've never seen another post about #vidcon besides my own, so I have no idea if anyone else on the fediverse is even messaging about it.
#Consent is of course a cornerstone of the fediverse experience, including someone consenting to whether or not they want a certain kind of content to pop up in their feeds. And having #contentWarnings and #altText encouraged if not required by most instances makes this place leagues more of a safe space for marginalized and/or traumatized people in a way that they cannot experience on mainstream platforms. But this can be very time-consuming and cumbersome, both remembering to add CWs and Alt Text to everything, coming up with custom text every time, and also on the end of it--when you follow enough people (or check out the public timelines) pressing "show content" over and over and over on each post gets REALLY annoying. But again, I'd rather have that tedium then have to subject myself to content that I find really triggering (for me, it's pretty much anything to do with kids and #gunViolence...I live in America where my kids are at risk of getting shot every day they go to school, and while I want to stay informed, I also need some mental prep before I look/read too much about it). And I know for others who have even more triggers, especially around things that the majority of people wouldn't find triggering (like pictures of food), then again, the fediverse is leagues better than the "normal" sites.
But back to searchability, as a veteran Twitter user (I cold-turkey quit in November, don't worry) I am well versed in how dealing with reactionary bullies who can take a tweet out of context and share it with their thousands if not millions of followers to dunk on you all at once. It can also open you up to a lot of haters in general, who will search out content like yours to leave hateful comments (like the comment sections of my Tiktok/Instagram/Youtube posts any time I mention #gunControl ...) BUT, even for content that I WANT people to find--primarily my topless equality content--again, it only shows up if followers of mine boost it to their own followers, and that's a very small niche. The only way we can ever hope to normalize gender-equal topless rights is if there are enough people putting pressure on social media sites and lawmakers to change their policies, and that requires a groundswell of support that's just not possible in isolated communities like Masto currently is. So I would LOVE some more methods for searchability, for people outside of my instance to find my content--and for me to find theirs.
I'm not a programmer, so I don't know how difficult this would be in reality. But the solution seems to me to be creating a searchable index, but making it opt-in only--accoounts like mine can opt-in to be found by people searching for #topless (who thereby might be influenced to think about topless equality, not just searching for porn), while others who want to keep their content protected (maybe searchable among their followers who they already trust, but not to the world wide web) can stay in the default opt-out status until they choose otherwise.
I've seen a few mentions of projects in the works LIKE this, but haven't seen one that's all the way working yet. If there's one that's mostly in working order, please recommend it! I'd love to give it a try.

To the migrating antifascist researchers tearing their hair out over lack of #searchability on Mastodon: don't despair! We're in talks for a solution! :af:
-
@AJSWritesthings @gwensnyder @meganox
For antifascist researchers moving here, we think the biggest hurdle is not the lack of #quotability but the lack of #searchability. The hashtag-only search function makes it very difficult to find accurate and timely information from other researchers.
A lot of people on Mastodon don't want those functions and have perfectly logical reasons as to why: privacy, and reducing vulnerability to harassment. Ideally, both quotability and searchability would be added into the basic interface but only as opt-in. So those of us who WANT to be fully searchable and quotable could opt in, while others would simply maintain the privacy boundaries they currently enjoy.
We are looking into Akkoma for more specialized antifascist research use, which apparently federates with Mastodon but allows those kinds of functions.
However, the argument that lack of QTs reduces conflict doesn't seem to play out. Every time we've talked about racism on Mastodon we've gotten plenty of conflict without QTs and have had to block quite a few clueless techbro types.
Other arguments against QTs are more valid though. On Twitter, they do encourage manipulative harvesting social capital via easy dunking, for example, and result in a lot of repetitive BS that kind of lowers useful discussion for everyone.
It seems like the best long-term solution would be basic opt-in privacy levels so any user could set their posts to be either quotable or not quotable, searchable or not searchable. That way, no one is forced into a new feature they don't want.
-
Here's a question for antifascists who, like us, have one foot here and one on Twitter (we're expecting to be banned there any day, though): what do you think about Mastodon's lack of searchability, and is there a way to compensate for it?
This is a fantastic platform in many ways - real human moderation, no ads, non-corporate, etc. - but for antifascist research purposes, it has one huge drawback: lack of easy searchability to quickly find recent information about fash activity. There's nothing like Twitter's Advanced Search capability that so many of us are familiar with using.
We understand and respect that many Fediverse users don't want advanced search capabilities for privacy reasons. But is there a way to work around this for those of us who do really want our content searched? We're using hashtags more and more, but the hashtag system is also a little difficult, since it won't accept spaces.
Let's say we publish information on a certain Chad Chuddington III, member of ChudForce and active across GA, TN and SC but based in West Chudton, GA. How would we present that information so that it can be searched by anyone else looking for fash in those orgs operating in those states?
Tagging @admin @moderation in case they have opinions or suggestions on this.
-
@wchr It would be great to see some #Hashtags in your #Toots for more #visibility and #searchability in the #Fediverse.
With #Mastodon V4, it is possible to #followHashtags - but to do so, we need them.
#UseHashtags -
CW: ⚠️ #Hashtag in #ContentWarning #Test
Wondering how hashtags act in the CW line, hypothesis is that they work just like the emojis in the CW.
Edit #1 CW Hashtag in Content Warning is Unclickable.
Checking for #Searchability.
Edit #2 Hashtags in #ContentWarning are not searchable.
#FediTips : Do not waste those # characters in the CW, place your HashTags in the body of the post.
-
@GrittyLipids Agreed, it does take some getting used to.
In addition, reposting/boosting posts also helps improve their #searchability for others (you can search hashtags, but only for posts on your instance - either ones made locally, or ones that your instance has a copy of because somebody followed that person, or boosted their post)
-
Is there a #FAQ on how #Google indexes #Mastodon posts (or not) , what's the role of an instance on #searchability #search etc ?
-
@amici
If it is not found in one minute of #searching, consider it #unfindable. We feel its important to simply stop using legacy #search, for everything, including #business. If one values their business. All our messaging including irl, speak in the language of FOSS and decentralisation.
On fedi, we use #hashtags on all our nouns and concepts for #searchability, too.
-
Many communities are moving to platforms like #Telegram or #Discord, but these platforms are not #searchable, limiting #AI development. Big Tech should support open protocols like #ActivityPub to promote #inclusivity and #data-driven AI development while maintaining #searchability and #accessibility of public communication.
