Two of the cenotaphs lining the walls of the chapel at Seamen's Bethel in New Bedford, memorializing sailors who lost their lives at sea. Most of these were installed by family members or crew-mates.
Yes, that is a cenotaph for Benjamin Frankin Pierce on the left, but not the one from Crabapple Cove.

The approximate view from the steeple of Seamen's Bethel, with the cupola atop the Whaling Museum partially blocking a view of the waterfront that would have been clear to piers lined with whaleships and barrels in Melville's day. Pier 3 on the left, State Pier on the right.

The view from Herman Melville's pew in the Seamen's Bethel, where he sat to watch Rev. Mudge give his sermon, partly inspiring Father Mapple. I'm in a Moby Dick book club right now, and this is where I read Father Mapple's sermon.

Looking up the center of the pews towards the bowsprit pulpit in New Bedford's Seamen's Bethel, which inspired the chapel in Melville's "Moby Dick". The pulpit was installed in 1961 in part to satisfy visitors who wondered where the pulpit described in the book and depicted in Huston's 1956 film adaptation was.
