TIL the navy—the actual US Navy—contacted the #VillagePeople to use “In the Navy” as a recruiting jingle. The Village People offered the rights gratis, in exchange for a day’s use of a warship. The navy let them shoot the video aboard the frigate USS Reasoner.
The Navy then realized “In the Navy” was a gay anthem, and decided not to use it.
At least, this story is frequently attested. Documentary proof seems lacking, and apparently the Navy denies it. But they would.
