  1. Cookie dough? Nope, just the chocolate chip sea cucumber (Isostichopus badionotus). This critter has no true brain: Instead, a complex system of neurons helps it interact with its environment through touch and the ability to feel the presence of light. Found throughout warm, shallow waters in the Atlantic, this species grows about 1 ft (30.5 cm) long. Fun fact: There are more than 1,000 species of sea cucumbers!

  3. “A sugar compound found in sea cucumbers could hold the key to stopping the spread of cancer. (…) Yet, these animals have been continually harvested for culinary use, suffering great losses as overharvesting began to explode in the latter half of the 20th century.”

The photograph is by @budak, well worth a follow on both Mastodon and Flickr. They find and photograph amazing animals.

  18. Search: who eats sea cucumbers?

Why ask? The cukes keep coral reefs healthy. npr.org/2024/03/13/1237026196/

Wikipedia says: the food product is commonly known as bêche-de-mer in French, from Portuguese bicho do mar, trepang in Indonesian, namako in Japanese, balatan in Tagalog, loli in Hawaiian and deniz patlıcanı in Turkish.

OK, so all you French Portuguese Indonesian Japanese Tagalog Hawaiian Turks, stop it!
