A 13-year-old boy from Australia has been hailed a hero after swimming nearly four hours through dangerous waters to save his mother and siblings who were swept out to sea. His determination and courage triggered a rescue that saved all lives. https://english.mathrubhumi.com/multimedia/videos/13-year-old-australian-boy-swim-save-mother-ulnupcw9?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #Teenager #SeaRescue #WesternAustralia #Courage #InspiringStory

The more details that come out about this story, the more heroic the kid is and the more amazing the rescue is!
Austin literally Doryed himself for four hours (“just keep swimming, just keep swimming”), then collapsed so completely the moment he’d called for help that he didn’t wake up again until he was in hospital. He’s getting around on crutches because his legs are so sore.
His mum and two younger siblings were in the water for eight to ten hours. The sun went down. That mum was floating in the dark thinking she’d sent her boy off to die and that they were all going to die too.
They’d managed to stay together but the waves were getting bigger and they were thrown apart.
Pitch dark. Rough water. Your kid screaming, floating away. Worse: can’t hear the other kid at all.
Holy fuck.
And then the sound of a boat engine.
If that rescue boat had come any later, even minutes later, than it did, my God.
And Austin’s first thought when he woke up was, I wasn’t fast enough. That came *so heartbreakingly close* to being true, and yet he couldn’t have done better.

World Cup-winning coach #JogiLöw takes a clear stance:
"For me, it’s obvious: people should not be left to die in the Mediterranean because they are seeking refuge from war, violence, or the #ClimateCrisis.
You do not let people drown."

Europe’s cooperation with the Libyan coast guard is framed as security policy. Yet thousands intercepted at sea end up in camps the UN deems unsafe.
Lukas Seiwerth traces how EU institutions helped build this system, why key human-rights obligations vanish in the process, and how “legal black holes” have become an integral part of Europe’s Mediterranean border regime 👇

Heroes of the Sea
The RNLI flag flies in Ballycotton Harbour.
The RNLI operates one of Ireland’s busiest lifeboat stations at Ballycotton, which launched 57 times in 2023 alone, rescuing 49 people and assisting 67 others. The station operates an all-weather lifeboat capable of handling the most challenging sea conditions off the Cork coast. Ballycotton RNLI has a proud history dating back to 1858, and the station’s crews have been awarded numerous medals for gallantry, including gold medals for particularly heroic rescues. The RNLI is a charity that relies entirely on voluntary donations and is crewed by unpaid volunteers who undergo extensive training to perform rescues in some of the most dangerous maritime conditions around the British and Irish coasts.

#LouiseMichel zurück auf See

„We know about your hard and stressful working conditions as seafarers, so today we send you our deepest thanks for every rescue you have carried out!
In the Mediterranean Sea, as well as in the Atlantic and the English Channel, you often rescue refugees who are in distress. Sometimes the boats are small, and sometimes they are very big, and they are almost always overcrowded. We have seen how you carry out these rescues no matter the weather conditions, even though when the waves are high it is dangerous for you as well.
We know that when you provide help your vessel becomes delayed, meaning there is more stress and harder work for you in the next port. But your hearts are wide, and you don’t want to pass by when brothers, sisters and their children are close to drowning.
Today we want to say: we see you! We will never forget every one of you who did what they could to stand by the side of the people in distress...“

Doctors Without Borders is suspending its Mediterranean rescue operation due to restrictions imposed by the Italian government under Giorgia Meloni.
====
In the past two years, Geo Barents faced four sanctions by the Italian authorities, imposing a total of 160 days of detention in port. These punitive measures came under the Piantedosi Decree, a law that was introduced by the Italian government in the beginning of 2023 that limits the operations of non-governmental (NGO) rescue ships in the Mediterranean Sea and undermines the maritime historical humanitarian and legal duty to save lives at sea. This month, Italy further intensified the sanctions by making it easier and faster to confiscate humanitarian search and rescue vessels.
The practice of Italian authorities of assigning distant ports, frequently in the north, to disembark people rescued at sea has further undermined the capacity of the Geo Barents to save lives at sea and be present where it is needed the most. Since the implementation of the Piantedosi Decree, the Geo Barents has spent half a year navigating to and back from distant ports instead of assisting people in distress.
In June 2023, the Italian authorities instructed the Geo Barents, which can fit to up to 600 people on board, to head to La Spezia, in the north of Italy, to disembark 13 survivors. This amounted to navigating more than 600 miles, despite the availability of much closer ports.
“After careful consideration, we have come to the conclusion that it is untenable to operate the Geo Barents under such absurd and senseless Italian laws and policies,” said Gil. “The rescue capacity of humanitarian vessels has been significantly underutilized and actively undermined by the Italian authorities.”

MV Louise Michel Rescue Ship

When the neofascist Farage criticised the RNLI for saving migrants from the English Channel/Manche, like many, I made a donation to support their work.
In this edition of their newsletter there's a moving story from Dover lifeboat about the rescue of 68+19 people from 2 boats on one trip, then coming back across busy shipping lanes with 1 engine broken.
Real heroes.
They rescue anyone without prejudice and rely on voluntary donations.
