(solved) Can you start kwin on NixOS without the drm component?

It appears the H11DSi mainboard from super micro doesn't have resizable BAR support and therefore the xe and xedrmfb driver get unhappy.

When I "systemctl stop display-manager.service" I get the blinking curser in the top right. But as soon as it starts the monitor looses signal and the logs show:

FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE-p3 on ARM64 in QEMU:

― SDDM, pictured, is barely usable.

After login to Plasma (X11), resolution is limited to 800 x 600.

How can I avoid the issue with SDDM?

Host: Kubuntu 25.10, Virtual Machine Manager with Ramfb for video. Guest: non-base packages from the latest repos.

Not reproducible with FreeBSD 16.0-CURRENT on ARM64 in QEMU on the same host.

Glad I started looking into my KDE startup time issue. H/t to @20000lbs_of_Cheese and @alci for some hints!

It's looking like there's a ~30 second timeout while *something* waits for fingerprint authentication. Nothing's prompting me for it, and I could have sworn I set this up the same on my work laptop. 🤷

Now I need to dig back into my pam/fprintd config.

Like xdm/gdm/sddm? Why so?

I don't use one with #Sway, mostly because the only display manager that they support is so plain, it doesn't look any different from a regular fbdev login screen, so I just use that. XD

My only gripe with #sddm is that it displays the user name, and doesn't have an option to do a true login prompt where the user provides the userid and password. That's poor security. :P

...oh wait, that's an option in the config file. Derp. XD

I have pushed a hot fix to the installation scripts for all three of my SDDM themes:

Elegant Manjaro SDDM Theme

The script now automatically backs up existing configuration files to .bak instead of removing them. This ensures your system settings are preserved during installation.

Ich habe auf meinem #Linux Desktop Rechner mal ein wenig mit den Displaymanagern rumgespielt.
Hintergrund: Ich habe ursprünglich den #Fedora #Cinnamon Spin installiert. Inzwischen nutze ich aber nur noch KDE. Da #Cinnamon den #LightDM als Desktopmanager hat und KDE als Standard eigentlich den #sddm dachte ich mir ich wechsle um es konsistent zu haben.
sddm fand ich gruselig. Habe dann #gdm probiert. Noch schlimmer.
Ich bin jetzt zurück auf LightDM und bleibe dabei. sddm und gdm werden gelöscht

Als am letzten Donnerstag mein #glasfaseranschluss ausgefallen ist, kam es seltsamerweise gleichzeitig zum beinahe Komlettausfall meines #manjaro #linux Systems.
Von jetzt auf gleich startete die grafische Oberfläche nicht mehr, #lightdm wollte einfach nicht mehr starten.
Vom USB-Stick konnte ich das Manjaro #Livesystem starten. Die #grafikkarte (bzw. #onboard Grafik, AMD) funktioniert also im Prinzip.
Bleibt mir nur noch die Konsole und die Hoffnung, dass ich bei Rückkehr des Internets #sddm installieren kann oder ein #update Abhilfe bringt und es dann hoffentlich wieder läuft.
Für Anregungen, was die Ursache sein könnte und wie man das Problem lösen könnte, bin ich dankbar.

Feels god no longer to be slaving for propertarian OS, that Ubuntu have turned into, withheld update for ransom. This gives the meaning of #ransomeware a new twist of meaning.

Yes, this gives me back a good feeling in my stomachs, knowing I'm back on FOSS OS form #Debian, even tho a lot of package are outdated and need personal actions to get up to date, such as the unbound v1.17 with a lot of security issues which isn't addressed and fixed until version 1.20, but that one is still held in the testing (former SID) repo, rather than getting it released.

And this makes me wondering on how they determine which Alpha releases should be force down to the stable repo, such as wayland, that can't recover displey:0 from the sleep state, unless you reboot the system, while stable releases like unbound are withheld. This would make the first time experience of Debian as a buggy and not properly maintained distro, making people running away screaming, only to never come back. Yes, it took me a couple of days to notice the dropdown on the #SDDM login screen, allowing me to switch back to good old stable #x11 window system.

Please Debian-devs, set X11 as default windows engine and leave waylands to the experimental group running on the testing releases. The rest of us have chosen Debian for stability not a endless counts of total brake downs, while actually doing literally nothing...

IF you are using Debian stable, please share your stories.

This said, I've become rather firmly determined that no more packages/apps/programs that gets in touch with the walled Garden/big5/BigTech surveillance network, will be installed on my network anymore, this includes and is not limited to Element (Chat client) using matrix.org network as primary network, this in running over cloudflare.

A few exception would be vsCode and my sponsored IDE's from jetbrains's opensource license.

Any #DisplayManager recommendations? Trying to move away from #SDDM. #Emptty is neat.

I can finally say I’ve upgraded successfully to #Fedora40. It was not without hassle this time and it started with what seemed to be a system that did not even give me a prompt after #rebooting, although the update process had seemed to go smoothly and quickly. Luckily, the virtual screens were working and so I could #login to a #shell. Although #sddm didn’t seem to be working, #kdm was and so I was able to open a desktop session, but only in #Gnome

Retried with KVM/Qemu image and actually added the #qxl display section to xorg.conf. Now the base system && #SDDM seem to work, hurray!
