w00t! @kde 6.7 is out on #KDE #Neon!
Although... A small hickup when upgrading from 6.6.x to 6.7 is between #plasmalogin and #sddm... Easy fix though.

Holy fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck does #SDDM suck ass! I spent thr last 45 minutes troubleshooting it just to find out that chaing the backgroud was causeing my system to hold up during boot.
I didn’t pull any shenanigans to change the login screen backgroud; I did everything through the Plasma desktop settings. These are the things that steer me away from #KDE… -

LTMNight SDDM Theme Brings a Modern Aesthetic and Live Shader Backgrounds to Your Login Screen
Taking on challenges helped me grow in Linux. After migrating to Arch and Hyprland, I built HyprLTM-Net and now introduce LTMNight SDDM Theme with GLSL shaders.

Vuelvo a rescue, desinstalo KDEnlive, reinicio, nada
#sddm, 'Unknown Symbol on bla bla bla'
Fin.

(solved) Can you start kwin on NixOS without the drm component?
It appears the H11DSi mainboard from super micro doesn't have resizable BAR support and therefore the xe and xedrmfb driver get unhappy.
> [drm] Failed to resize BAR2 to 16384M (-ENOSPC). Consider enabling 'Resizable BAR' support in your BIOS
When I "systemctl stop display-manager.service" I get the blinking curser in the top right. But as soon as it starts the monitor looses signal and the logs show:

@pertho I heard the fan spin up on the host after I logged out from Plasma (X11) on a FreeBSD guest.
Pictured: excessive use of the CPU by sddm-greeter-qt6.
A separate bug, with the same underlying cause? I wonder.

FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE-p3 on ARM64 in QEMU:
― SDDM, pictured, is barely usable.
After login to Plasma (X11), resolution is limited to 800 x 600.
How can I avoid the issue with SDDM?
Host: Kubuntu 25.10, Virtual Machine Manager with Ramfb for video. Guest: non-base packages from the latest repos.
Not reproducible with FreeBSD 16.0-CURRENT on ARM64 in QEMU on the same host.

Glad I started looking into my KDE startup time issue. H/t to @20000lbs_of_Cheese and @alci for some hints!
It's looking like there's a ~30 second timeout while *something* waits for fingerprint authentication. Nothing's prompting me for it, and I could have sworn I set this up the same on my work laptop. 🤷
Now I need to dig back into my pam/fprintd config.

@neal thanks.
Not directly related, a review of <https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=484259> may be timely:
― Auto login behaviour has X11 session selected even though Wayland is currently in use

I'm super excited to switch over to #KDE 's brand new #Plasma Login Manager, whenever #EndeavourOS chooses to support it officially - which they've said to be in the near future. #SDDM has been pretty broken/meh for me for some time now, sometime after Plasma 6 update or so.

> But I'm not so anti system D that it's a fight I want to make. It actually works pretty well.
I'm more concerned with the overall direction than the individual components.
systemd-{home,journal}d can go take a long walk off a short pier, though. 😄> I am very much anti display manager.
Like xdm/gdm/sddm? Why so?
I don't use one with #Sway, mostly because the only display manager that they support is so plain, it doesn't look any different from a regular fbdev login screen, so I just use that. XD
My only gripe with #sddm is that it displays the user name, and doesn't have an option to do a true login prompt where the user provides the userid and password. That's poor security. :P
...oh wait, that's an option in the config file. Derp. XD

Sprucing up my good old #T470
Ordered a new 72Wh battery which will arrive tomorrow, going to use this computer as a #Writing #ToolJust installed a fresh install of #Fedora43 with #KDE but will whittle it a bit down so I will have a #NoFrills interface, almost thinking about just disabling #SDDM and using #CLI only..

I have pushed a hot fix to the installation scripts for all three of my SDDM themes:
Elegant Arch SDDM Theme
Elegant Manjaro SDDM Theme
#LTMNight SDDM ThemeThe script now automatically backs up existing configuration files to .bak instead of removing them. This ensures your system settings are preserved during installation.
Thank you for the feedback.

The LTMNight SDDM Theme’s GLSL shader background in action. No fluff, just clean performance.
I’d love to hear your suggestions and feedback.

We've created the "Sonic Silver" #SDDM theme based on the AndromiX-SDDM-Theme project by Ziednaga with some fixes. It comes in both light and dark. You can get it at https://github.com/Sonic-DE/silver-sddm. #SonicDE

Originally released in 2016, I have completely modernized Elegant Arch Linux SDDM theme to meet today's standards while keeping the classic elegance you love.
Rebuilt from the ground up with Qt 6, it is now faster and smoother. Whether you are on a standard laptop or a 4K monitor, it scales perfectly.

Finally finished my new SDDM theme!
Meet LTMNight v0.1.0. I built this because I wanted a login screen that feels "alive" with proper video background support.
✨ Live Video Backgrounds
✨ Dynamic Hostname Header
✨ Interactive Setup Script
✨ Touchscreen Friendly (Virtual Keyboard)Check it out and let me know if you like it!

@ly2en try SDDM instead of GDM.
SDDM was fine with GNOME when I tested a few days ago.
-
@Tionisla It's hard to read the future.
I really like sddm, it is Wayland compatible, works nicely, looks nice and is customizable.
I get why a desktop environment may want to have its own session manager.
I guess Xfce is the way forward? It may be time for the FreeBSD community to engage the developers of other DE's to understand intentions re: systemd.
As far as I know the only DE's that have Wayland momentum are Budgie, MATE, LXQt, Cinnamon. Are Budgie or Cinnamon available in FreeBSD? Pantheon (elementary) is Wayland but I suspect it is closely tied to systemd .
GhostBSD's Gershwin is intriguing but sounds like it's early days for Wayland support.
DE's are an easy button that I appreciate but I guess going back to old skool methods like rolling yer own desktop using something like Wayfire, labwc, hikari, etc, with ly, lightdm, sddm is future proof(ish).
With KDE abandoning sddm will it be maintained? That's another question.
-
One thing i find completely unintuitive in KDE is that, to automatically log in as some user, you have to go to "Color & Themes > Login Screen" on the System Settings, and click on the "Behavior..." button in the taskbar.
What has that anything to do with theming?
It took me like an hour to find that option the first time.
