  1. Dear websites,

If I need to scroll DOWN your page I do not want a competing box that scrolls ACROSS the page that will take over the scroll direction as I pass it and actually make it damned hard to scroll PAST it.

I will never want this. Whatever you've put in that box isn't worth it.

If you feel you simply MUST do this, at least make the box diminutive in height and not spanning the whole page, so it's relatively easy to get past!

    No love,

  3. 🚀 Wow, folks, an "exciting" new browser library that magically measures paragraph heights without touching the DOM! 🎩✨ Because, clearly, the world was crying out for more efficient text rendering effects while we all wait for Web 3.0 to reinvent #scrollbars. 🙄

  5. @peteorrall

Yes, dear God, yes. The modern #ScrollBars are another huge gripe of mine.

KDE Plasma's default scrollbars are just serviceable enough, and I've figured out how to force usable scrollbars on #Firefox and #Thunderbird (can share, if you like).

Why the fork do scrollbars on my desktop (which I use with a MOUSE) have to look just like they do in iOS (which aren't exactly USABLE to begin with)?

Who the flip is making these decisions? Can I get their name and address so I can deliver a badly needed #wedgie?!? XD

  7. regarding #scrollbars

I kinda get why you'd design ridicilously tiny, vertical scrollbars? I mean… not really, but yes, they aren't the primary interface for people to scroll, but more of some indicator now?

    but…

    HORIZONTAL SCROLLBARS?

Why would you make those ridicilously tiny too? It's not like there were dual scroll wheels on mice nowadays?

Most people don't have one of those 90s "a4tech" "4d mouse" thingies? Those kinda died out? (and they were stupid to begin with, because both wheels were oriented vertically)

Yes, you shouldn't have people scrolling in both directions… but IF you have and thus show that interface element, then making it unclickable small doesn't make ANYTHING better?

(and since both should look alike, maybe just have visible scrollbars and be done with it! but that's just like my opinion man?"

  9. Where am I on this page? Nobody knows. I cannot ask the scrollbar
because it is hiding as a thin ghostly translucent grayness.

The Mozilla Corporation / Mozilla Foundation's usability and
accessibility experts must have been on a cocaine fueled binge when
greenlighting the killing of Mozilla Firefox's scrollbar.

Or is it the Gimp Toolkit people, the Gnome Foundation and/or Gnome
Project that are behind this travesty? This idiocy? This abhorrent
    lapse of moral judgement?

  10. I once found a thread where the the #scrollbars issue was mentioned.

  12. #Mastodon #Question :
Is there a way to stop the scroll bars (both vertical and horizontal) from vanishing when the mouse is moved away from them?! It seems idiotic that you have to close in on the bar slowly to wake it up and be able to see where the actual 'scroll cursor' is to grab it in order to make a fine adjustment. It's not like they would take up any extra space if they were visible all the time.

  13. #Scrollbars tell you how long a page is by screenfuls (number of viewports), while also telling you how many screenfuls remain from your current position… Once you see the text size, the spacing, understand the header & maybe footer size, and consider how quickly you read, you will have a good sense if the page is something you can skip, skim, or tuck in to read. I bet you already do that without consciously thinking.”

    Scrollbars are not visual clutter.

  14. CW: firefox scroll bar punk

    - in the address bar, type about:config and press enter
    - search for widget.gkt-overlay-scrollbars.enabled, and set it to false, to keep scroll bars from hiding
    - set widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.style to 4, to make scroll bars rectangular
    - set widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.size.override to 24, to make scroll bars wide
    - set general.autoScroll to true, to enable "middle mouse button scrolling"
    - install the Custom Scrollbars addon (addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firef) to change to colour of scroll bars (global and site-specific)

  15. How can infinite amount of space be #visualized without #scrollbars?

Do you know of any examples?

  16. Having difficulties using the thin #scrollbars in #Firefox 🧡 on #Windows11? 🔍

    1. Type "about:config" in your address bar
    2. Press "Accept the risk and continue"
    3. Search for "widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.style"
    4. Set the value to "4"
    5. Close the "about:config" tab

A value of "4" corresponds to the Windows 10 styling of scrollbars, that is, the wider variant. Happy scrolling!

PS. Scrollbars auto-hide by default. There is a Windows setting to "always display scrollbars".

  17. @zeldman These #scrollbars even work! Pretty nice. Always amused me when they went from fixed-height thumb to height based on percent of content displayed - because with a giant document like a whole book, the thumb gets reeeeealy small, you almost can't grab it to slide it up and down! Technology never really solved every aspect of how to do that right for all content. (Then infinite-scroll ruined everything.)

  18. #Astuce #Vivaldi #Desktop :

  20. The trend of 2 pixel wide #scrollbars in every browser is terrible.
I never see them and hav to search. #UX at wworst.

    Is there a setting in #Chrome or #Firefox ?

  21. With this Firefox AddOn, you can finally #MakeScrollbarsVisibleAgain :-)

    addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firef

    > Give your browser a personalized touch with custom scrollbar colours! You can select from any range of colours and toggle between the default width and thin scrollbar... or hide it altogether if that's what floats your boat.

  24. Hey #FediHelp

I've noticed the up and down arrows on the scroll bars are missing - which is very annoying, I use them all the time

Can they be restored? Or can I choose a different theme? Or is there a workaround?

This is when using mastodon.online - which is version v4.0.2

It's the same in Chrome Version 107.0.5304.110

    and Firefox version 106.0.5

  26. My main thing is I need REAL , for the love of God!

I can't deal with iOS-style disappearing ugly narrow scrollbars of doom. That's why I picked the Leopard theme, but its' not really the best fit for my environment.

Can someone recommend a tasteful, light, Arc-ish or Mint-Y-style theme with actual solid scrollbars?
