DNF'd my A race this year, but overall pleased with the effort. #running #TrailRunning #mountains #scrambling
- 42km and 3,000m elevation gain completed, with 11 of 14 summits.
- Longest one-day time-on-feet and elevation gain for me
- Scrambling was good - with a PB for the Tryfan traverse (took almost an hour off to go well under 2 hours for the full traverse).
- But I lost pace on the technical 'runnable' sections (Pen Yr Ole Wen descent, Glyderau plateau). I fell once and then backed off, I wasn't picking up my feet enough as I tired.
- Was 1 hour behind cutoff pace at the 42km checkpoint (55km race). I was still on the previous summit when the cutoff came, but the race started 30 mins late so I was 90 minutes behind overall.
- I did walk once I realised I wasn't going to make it, so could have probably shaved some time, at a risk of more trips/falls.
- Fuelling, hydration, and gear all went very well. Weather conditions were mostly perfect (8-10°C, light winds, mostly dry and overcast). -

I felt inspired to write a blog post ... "Treading the fine line between Scrambling and Rock Climbing"
Some thoughts on personal doubts, risk, mountain companions & rope protection in that grey area where scrambling and rock climbing overlap.

Some snaps from this week's "Arista del Campanitas" scramble.
Feeling inspired, I'm drafting a blog titled "Treading the Fine Line Between Scrambling and Rock Climbing" — exploring that gloriously confusing grey zone where our discipline labels overlap.
First image traces the approximate route; the rest capture the kind of scenery that makes you forget your legs are burning.

What a day yesterday. Lasting memories of that one for sure. Las Campanitas ridge to Veleta. A complex, dramatic route done without fuss or drama. Here's one with Linda at the summit of Salón 3325m with other members of our group scrambling up the right hand ridge

Really looking forward to "la Arista del Campanitas" tomorrow. This ridge to Veleta 3394m summit is a proper scrambling route with grade 3+ (S) rock sections. Will be nice to get in the cool air above 3000m and get my hands on warm rock again.

Ran a short rope protection and security course for some hill walking and scrambling friends of mine today. Included improvised harnesses, Italian hitch, clove hitch, assisted hoist, anchors, rappelling, classic belay, belays, prusicks, basic rescue and more. Hopefully everyone came away more confident about having to deal with an emergency situation. Anyway, it was a lot of fun and laughs in the strong winds.
