Eight-year-old Deanston finished in Banyuls casks, a French fortified wine from the French/Spanish border, NC, NCF at 55.5% ABV.
Dark sticky raisins, sultanas and dates on the nose with wafts of liquorice and cola. Big flavours hit the tongue with more dark fruit, chocolate, treacle toffee, and gentle spice. Lovely waxy mouthfeel to finish.

Loads of red fruit on the nose: strawberries, raspberries and a touch of black cherry. Pencil shavings. More juicy red fruit on the palate with sticky raisins, liquorice and black treacle, sweet, cinnamon-spiced apple finish.

Slight ginger spice with wave after wave of red fruit on the nose: raspberries, redcurrants and sweet strawberries, like Angel Delight 😀 (a powdered dessert mix here in the UK). Citrusy orange hits the tongue which develops into sweet candied orange peel, caramel and a lovely dry, woody spiciness. A long finish of liquorice, spice and subtle grassy notes.
It is superb 😍 I get something different with every mouthful. A bottle that is unlikely to last long.

Deanston Virgin Oak. NAS, NC, NCF, 46.3% abv.
Fresh orchard fruit, citrusy notes of orange and lemon peel, with lots of honey and vanilla coming through. Typical Deanston waxy mouthfeel with more fruit joined by liquorice, woody spice and chocolate. Nice spicy drying finish of ginger and cinnamon.
It's a young spirit (5- 7 years) decanted into virgin oak for less than a year so it's not like chewing on a wooden ice-lolly stick, just nicely balanced oak, fruit, vanilla and spice.
Astonishingly good value - at the moment it can be had on Amazon UK for just over twenty-six pounds.

Tri Carragh - Glen Elgin 12, 55.5% abv, NC, NCF.
A wonderful offering from Edinburgh IBs Tri Carragh. Distilled in 2011 and transferred to a 1st fill Tawny Port Cask in 2022 for 15 months.
Black cherry compote, blackcurrants and raspberries. Sweet barley sugar and dark chocolate. First sip and it's more of the same - lots of it. A few drops of water release gentle floral notes and a touch of liquorice and mint. A lovely long finish with lingering cinnamon spice and orange zest.
This is dram #13 in my whisky advent calendar.

Lovely nose of sweet oranges and sour rhubarb rock (a Scottish sweetie made to look and taste like a stick of rhubarb) with hints of chocolate and lemon.
Creamy mouth feel and prickly cinnamon spice on the tongue. More citrusy fruit with floral notes coming through. A warm finish of ginger and lingering orange - a bit like Grand Marnier 😃

I'm feeling in a bit of a PX mood tonight so kicking off with this fine example from the Doune Distillery. Nine years maturation then a further three finishing in PX casks. It's perhaps a wee bit pricey, but it is fantastic.
Deanston 12 PX Cask Finish 2008, NC, NCF, 58.1% abv.
Typical PX nose - sweet caramel, dark fruit - figs, sultanas, dates and chocolate, hints of coffee and nutiness. Woody spiciness on the palate with more fruit, vanilla and sweet toffiness. The tiniest touch of spent matches and sulfur at the end developing into a lovely finish of sweet summer fruit and spice.

Wafts of dark chocolate, sticky dark fruit, dark treacle and subtle underlying floral notes. A lovely creamy mouthfeel of liquorice and juicy sweet tropical fruit with hints of citrus. Sweet cinnamon spice finish. A wee touch of water and everything intensifies.
Another fantastic offering from Stravaig Spirits. It's a bit of a banger!

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a huge fan of everything from the Oldmeldrum Distillery and I’m enjoying these and a bit of reading before Friday night football kicks off. All three sherry finish and I’ve started with the Distillery Bottling.
Glen Garioch 15. NC, NCF, 53.7% abv. Dominated by dried fruit - figs, raisins, dates, Christmas Pudding! Bitter dark chocolate on the palate with dark treacle, orange peel, Cola Cubes, and a touch of savouriness. Warm spicy finish of cinnamon and pepper. Tingly and nippy on the lips and tongue 😀
I got the Cadenhead's (NC, NCF, 11yo, 58% abv) on a visit to Campbeltown earlier this year and the Tri Carragh (NC, NCF, 11yo, 54.7% abv) at a great whisky tasting in Diggers, my local bar with Tri Carragh owners Ryan and Ola. Cadenhead's next and keep the best till last.

Bunnahabhain Stiùireadair - NAS, NCF, NC, 46.3% abv caramel, vanilla and briny seaspray on the nose. Sweet honey and fruit with hints of custard hit the palate along with cinnamon spice and cloves. Medium, slightly salty, spicy finish.
Not the most complex of drams but pretty good for a very reasonably priced Islay, and it's over 46% 😀

Friday night football! All the wee jobs have been completed on the boat and it's time to relax with a few drams.
The closest distillery to me is on Arran so this fine Arran 10 will do just fine - such a wonderful dram for not a lot of money.
Arran 10 NC, NCF, 46% abv.
It's like sticking your nose in a fruit bowl! Soft honey notes with green apples and pears, a wee bit of lemon zest and a touch of floral. It's a lovely creamy mouthful with more apple, pear, and some shortbread. Warm medium finish - absolutely delicious and outstanding value.
We are off to Lamlah (Arran) on Sunday and then off across the North Channel to Glenarm Northern Ireland - I suspect that this bottle will not last long and may well be finished by next week!

Friday night drams and a choice of sport on the telly - football, rugby and snooker.
Annandale Man o Words - NC, NCF 60.6% abv, NAS but distilled in 2016 and bottled in 2022. Golden pale golden colour. Lots of pears and green apple on the nose with a wee hint of banana. Comes in hot, burny on the lips and tongue but soon calms down to more lovely fresh crisp apple, creamy vanilla and tropical fruit notes. Lingering sweet spicy finish with a touch of salt.
A nice dram but way overpriced!
The football is a meaningless Scottish Championship match, not sure if I can stand watching my alma mater Boroughmuir being humped by Ayr so it looks like the snooker (which has been good) and flicking back and forth to check other scores.

Being a local I like to support the The Holyrood Distillery and I have couple of their four expressions. I really enjoy these two unlike the "Embra", which I tried recently in Diggers, and found so hot it might well come in half way up the scoville scale 😂.
I'm starting with the "Arrival", their inaugural release and unusual in that it has a very long fermentation time (104 hours) using two strains of yeast and matured in a mix of Oloroso Butts, Pedro Ximénez Hogsheads, Bourbon Barrels, and Rum Barriques. The first #whisky produced in Edinburgh for nearly 100 years.
Holyrood Arrival, NC, NCF, NAS, 46.1% abv
Slight nose burn (it is quite young) hints of dried fruit, chocolate, cinnamon spice and orange zest. More chocolate as it hits the tongue, raisins, not overly sweet, Liquorice Allsorts and I get a wee touch of menthol and pine. Long, spicy finish with a touch of bitterness towards the end.

Friday night #ScottishChampionship Football and Dundee Utd. travel to the banks of The Clyde to face Greenock Morton. Whilst United are four points clear of 2nd place Raith Rovers, they won't want to slip up.
Tonight's accompanying dram is this rather splendid Lowland Blended Malt from Douglas Laing. I think the label is just one of the best!
The Epicurean, NAS, NC, NCF, 46.2% abv.
At first, there are lovely buttery notes which are joined by fresh lemon and mint and slight wafts of grass and hay. The first sip is of orchard fruit and is quickly followed by sweet caramel with sweet chocolate notes. Nice peppery finish which lingers on the tongue. A really pleasant easy sipper which can be picked up for under thirty-five notes.
Dunfermline go two up. Dundee Utd defending is nonexistent.
A great start for Dunfermline and a really well worked goal.
American Cream Soda, honey, apples and pears on the nose. Initially, a bit of alcohol but after sitting for a few minutes, this softens and I get wee whiffs of Scottish tablet. Starts with citrusy orange that develops on the palate with some woodiness and caramel. Diving back in there are hints of sweet chocolate, orange marmalade and more honey. The high abv gives a lovely warm finish of ginger and pepper. Comforting oily mouthfeel. With the addition of some water, freshness develops. Wonderful dram from Woody Tan.

Whisky's not just for Christmas!
From Atom Labs, who work across several different spirits, this "&whisky" is from an undisclosed Speyside Distillery - I couldn't find much information about the whisky or the distillery, however, a rumour is that it's aged in Oloroso casks and the distillery uses wormtubs, so that narrows it down - a little. It is associated with the online retailer Master of Malt.
Christmas Cake & Dark Chocolate & Medjool Dates & Cinnamon 8 Year Old, 48% abv, NCF - no mention of colour.
It is everything it says on the label 😃 Dark fruit, chocolate, spice, marzipan, caramel, dates, raisins - they are all there in abundance and it's an absolute bargain for around 40UK.
The name was inspired by a Beatles T-shirt created by Dutch designers "Experimental Jetset".

I love Glen Garioch and the 14 yo from Edinburgh IBs Tri Carragh is superb. - bright, fresh and satisfying. Lovely wafts of cherries and red fruit on the nose along with slight hints of vanilla and herbs. Creamy, buttery mouth feel with more orchard fruit and cherry sweets. Medium sweet floral and spicy wood finish. A wee touch of water brings out the complex flavours.
Glen Garioch 14 yo 53.4% abv, NC, NCF
The Murray McDavid is finished in Hungarian Tokaji wine casks and this really adds something. Many of the same wonderful tastes as the Tri Carragh but with added honey and orange notes. Juicy, oily, buttery mouthfeel with hints of tropical fruit and vanilla. Long warm, dry oaky, spicy finish.

Annandale Man O Words Founders Selection - Distilled 2016, bottled 2022 60.6% abv, NCF, NC.
Light honey colour in the glass. Floral and hay-like wafts and I get a hint of cooked vegetables and varnish! Spicy slightly bitter first mouthful which develops into sweeter baked apple and vanilla. Medium spicey, dry finish.
The distillery was established in 1836 closed in 1924 but re-opened in 2007. The distillery has released two whiskies named "Man O’Swords" after Scottish warrior Robert the Bruce who had strong links with Annan and Annadale, and "Man O’ Words" after the poet Robert Burns who worked as an exciseman in the area.

It is very much lighter in the glass than I thought it would be. Grassiness with a hint of mint, fruit and a slight floral note. The initial taste is really not what I expected and I'm not really sure what I am finding - certainly very strong stuff and needs water - touches of green apple a bit of farmyard and earthiness. Definite strong black coffee notes. It really is quite peppery - almost chilli pepper hot. Slight bitter finish and burny spicy lips!
I think I will let it sit for a while. 😀

Bags of orchard fruit on the nose, green grapes, milky toffee and just a hint of spent matches. Like chewing a fruit basket! A beautiful creamy mouthfeel with peaches, pears, red berries, and some vanilla fudge thrown in. Lovely warm finish with gentle touches of liquorice and a hint of spice. Just outstanding :-D
