  16. #Scotstober word 31 baigie. I've an idea for using all three turnip Scots words regarding genocidal ethnic hatred but I'll do it in a weeks time. So here's one for baigie. Even a turnip contributing makes AI more intelligent than AI on its own. Plus we had a cosmic burst from the sun this week. But we survived.

  20. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Andrew Marr, Gaelic and Scots

"The Gaelic language was not at one time merely spoken just about everywhere in Scotland with the sole exception of the Northern Isles including being spoken natively the area of modern Edinburgh, it was also central to the very creation of Scotland as a nation. Scotland literally means ‘land of the Gaelic speakers’."

  23. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 From Scotland's Census:

2.5% of people aged 3 and over had some skills in Gaelic in 2022. This is an increase of 43,100 people since 2011 when 1.7% had some skills in Gaelic.

The percentage of people with some skills in Scots also increased, to 46.2% in 2022 from 37.7% in 2011.

    Scots and Gaelic are growing!

  25. Pleased to see the March 2024 issue of Burns Chronicle is newly out from EUP. This issue includes my book review of "Scottish Poetry, 1730-1830" edited by Daniel Cook - a review free for all to read online. In a nutshell I really liked it, though since I was asked to write about 1000 words in my review I said much more than that! euppublishing.com/toc/burns/13 #ScottishLiterature #ScottishPoetry #RobertBurns #Poetry #18thCentury #EighteenthCentury #Scots #ScotsLeid #Gaelic #Poems #BookReview #Scotland

  27. Last night's new to me #Scots word was "perfyte", as in the 1648 #will I was transcribing: "or thair severall mantenance until the sd tyme of thair marriage or perfyte age". Elsewhere the will specifies perfyte as "xxi yeirs complett" i.e. 21. This was all reminding me last night of the Madame de Pompadour #DoctorWho episode - "She is not complete!" dsl.ac.uk/entry/dost/perfite_a #Language #ScotsLanguage #ScotsLeid #LegalHistory #ScottishLaw #ScottishLegalHistory

  34. Reading from Galloway Gossip: The Buchanites

No proper wee history video this week as we are all sick here at home. As a means of recompense, here's another reading from the ever surprising, often shocking work of Dr Robert DeBruce Trotter, Galloway Gossip. Here he briefly discusses the Buchanites - a religious cult of the late 1700s based in Christian tradition led by the charismatic Elspeth Buchan.
