Scones will taste light and fluffy if you add 1 ingredient used by pastry chef
There’s nothing quite as comforting as a freshly baked scone. Light, buttery, and just the right amount of crumbly, scones have long been a staple of afternoon tea. Wh…

Reading that tea (prepared camellia sinensis leaves) was in use in London in the mid 1600s.
And that scones appeared in documents from around 1550.
So when I read, "afternoon tea has been around longer than scones" I get doubtful.

Tried to make some scones (sk-onz).
Went the older "lower amount of butter" route using 50g instead of the modern 75g. (Though maybe the oldest recipe was 25g?)
Rubbing the butter in was hard work.
And my oven seems to have been much colder (20 degrees Celcius colder?) than the dial.
So "golden brown" took some 24 minutes. Instead of 10.A "lightly floured" baking tray was not enough to get a clean release.
Consistency when baked was pretty good.

I recently read that some people in the U.K. like to (jokingly?) argue about whether one should put jam or cream first on a scone.
This is the kind of lighthearted argument I love to read about.
If you’ve lived in the U.K. or are otherwise connected to it in some way and have an opinion on this, which one do you think should go on a scone first and why?

Buttermilk finished with another batch of homemade scones, but we still have half a tub of clotted cream left with days until it expires. There’s only one thing we can do: Buy more buttermilk, and bake more scones! #baking #scones #ClottedCream

Aus England haben wir uns letzte Woche #ClottedCream mitgebracht. Heute habe ich zum ersten mal #Scones gebacken und wir haben #CreamTea daheim genießen können, #mjam. Schon mal probiert? #TeaWithMilk #Delicious #Cornwall #Devon #Speciality #foodporn

Afternoon tea existed long before the scone, yet it’s hard to imagine the ritual without one. I grew up with scones at my grandmother’s tea table in Venezuela, a tradition brought over by my British family. Here’s the curious history of how the scone took over. #FoodHistory #FoodCulture #FoodHeritage #FoodStories #AfternoonTea #Scones
